Well Amazing Queen
The Queen DVD Condition stated Used - Very Good well it looked Brand New complete with accompanying Booklet considering that this is many years old.First this is an old rendition of 5.1 DTS , I have 7.1 setup and took great care in setting the system up, the listening position. Some of the Video (small amount) is a bit crude but the sound is something else the separation and spacial effects are quite stunning with plenty of rear and all around separation considering the age of the product. The only other 5.1 I have is the Beatles 1 so quite limited, I have just ordered a few other 5.1.Just to add a bit more to the review while I mentioned the Beatels 1 5.1 while the sound on this is not so pleasing in it's spacial settings is very flat and the Martin mix is not a patch on the Queen 5.1 in both it's versions managed to get Both QUEEN 5.1 DvDs and cannot stop listening to then each time I play them I hear some I missed in the fields of sound a truly mesmerising experience.

You gotta get this
Well, I feel it's always best to get the minus points out of the way in a review. There's only one so let's get it over with. I found with this DVD that the re-mastering of the soundtrack to DTS 5.1, although superb, often left poor old freddie's voice rather faded in the background. Perhaps this was a fault with my set up and I would be interested to hear other peoples comments. I found it particularly noticeable in the closing part of Bohemian Rhapsody, "so you think you can stop me etc". Anyway, other than that what a fantastic DVD set this is. Overall the re-mastering of the soundtrack does the music justice bringing out the background vocals and riffs to the full. I have owned this collection on video and cd and I was suprised to hear things which I never knew existed. The picture quality is fine but not excellent. Most of this is older stuff and in some videos it does tend to show. There's more than enough on the two discs on the value for money front and I cannot wait for the second collection to come out in November. Finally, congratulations to David Mallet for finding some of the unused footage for the Bicycle Race video. What a fine collection of frames, (ooh er missus). The bikes ain't bad either! Buy it yesterday.

A mixed bag
I so much wanted to love this DVD. I've been a huge Queen fan since the early 80's, in fact, ever since I was given a copy of 'Queen Greatest Hits', from which this DVD is based. Sadly, it is not without its problems, and most of them appear to be self-inflicted from Queen's point of view. First the good:The sound quality is magnificent. Really, you will not find better versions of these tracks anywhere. All the tracks have been remixed with Brian and Roger's close supervision in DTS 5.1, and tracks which sounded pretty good to begin with are given a whole new lease of life. There are excellent use of surround channels, which embellish the music rather than just create an ambience. Queen recognise that each channel is seperate and discrete, and the result is very very impressive indeed.Aside from this, why else should a Queen fan buy this DVD? Well, there is a 30 minute 'documentary' with Brian at the mixing desk, armed with none other than the original 2" tape of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. From here he proceeds to show in detail the construction of the track, from how the operatic sections were built up, to the layered guitars, as well as littering his speech with little-known facts about how Queen actually went about writing music at that time. It's fascinating, and for any musician, its a goldmine of information. So much for the good. Now the bad.The videos are presented in 16:9 widescreen. Which is curious, since none of the videos were shot using this aspect ratio. They achieved this by cutting the top and bottom off and zooming in. The result (particularly on film this old & worn down) looks dreadful. It's blotchy, you can't see all the information that was originally filmed, and there are even a few synching problems. The quality is only marginally better than the VHS version, and given that the VHS version is presented in the original aspect ratio, I would actually prefer that. WHY was this put into widescreen when it wasn't intended for that??Despite these shortcomings, I would reccommend this DVD to all Queen fans and those who are curious about what Queen were all about. Die-hard fans will buy it anyway, just because it has Queen on the cover and also to get the sound recordings & Brian's retrospective documentary. I just hope that when Volume 2 is released, they don't make the same sorry mistake again with the videos.

A tad boring
I was let down by this DVD. It felt like 2 hours of repeated playback sessions...at times freddie's mouth mumbles while the music keeps playing and his voice is heard loud and clear. I know it's the videos and the directors fault but josh hartnett they should have done it a bit more creative.
