Brilliant tool for an autistic boy
I bought this DVD for my non-verbal, severely autistic toddler. He started talking and pointing at the age of 18 months, and appeared to be developing normally. Sadly (heartbreakingly), he lost his speech gradually until he became completely non-verbal by the time he was two years old. He was receiving specialist play therapy, which included speech therapy, but nothing seemed to encourage speech. I decided to research, in desparation, for something to help. I came across a review elsewhere for this DVD, which praised it very highly for helping autistic children. I decided to give it a try and wow, did this help! I played it twice a day; once in the morning and then again in the afternoon. The simplicity meant the words and props stood out clearly, which was so important, and ultimately the key to its success. Most children's DVDs are busy and overwhelming. The therapist featured pronounces the words (one at a time) really clearly, accompanied by a wonderful, simple coresponding item, which reinforces the word. He responded well to it almost straight away, and really enjoyed watching it. The great thing is that, along with his therapy, he started making noises - steps towards speaking. He became familiar with the words and items, and the sequence they featured, and when they came up on the screen he tried to say the words! He wasn't able to fully pronounce them, but he was trying, and the sounds were definite attempts at the words featured. This DVD was instrumental in getting my boy's attention and, vitally, his interest. After some time, he was able to say 'ball', and several other words. It's been eight years since then, and I now have a very chatty 10 year old boy. How wonderful is that? It's not just for babies - it's fantastic for children with autism, too.

FANTASTIC
LOVE IT. It's not overloaded and might seem too basic but that's just right. My daughter is 17 months. We've watched three times. Twice when she was 16 and another time recently. Important to me not to repeat dvd or allow her to watch always as would lose the new factor. I see it as educational so don't want her bored with it. With the first viewing she started to say 'miltch' meaning milk and now everything else. She understands things and would rather use signs than speak but that's how they progress. For example wave bye rather than say it. But after first viewing she started to say miltch which kind of has boost her confidence to saying things like mama and mummy with more confidence. The third viewing she picked up 'up' and pointing up too. It also acts as a knowledge check for us. If she recognises a word, you need to see the excitement. So endearing. Like she's pleased with herself too. For example if she sees the expression of hug and hears teddy, she's running around looking for her teddy and hugging. She's waving byes and oh saying them too. It's also an entertainment. You should also see my daughter dancing excitedly when the old macdonald's tune comes up. She's nodding her head, spinning, performing moves I've never seen. So even if you feel your toddler knows all, which can't be as I'm pretty sure they will still pick one or two things, let it be an entertainment so no losses. It's engaging for her. I was able to do sewing in th background while chipping in here and there. Don't play more than once though at a time! They will reach diminishing returns, get bored and maybe stop learning. Well that's my opinion. It also boost speech confidence. This woman knows what she is doing. Don't take for granted looks so easy. It works. So what have you got to lose?Anyway I like it. Kudos. Also try differnt things. One might not have all the answers but the package does. Good luck!

A bit amateurish considering the claims
I've never watched a DVD aimed at baby speech before but considering the price and reviews here I expected a lot more in terms of duration and content. I just thought there would be more to this than a smiling lady saying the odd word followed by a minute or so of associated footage so it's probably my fault as much as the producers'. Considering the pedigree of the production team I am disappointed that I could have come up with something similar with my mates given a few weeks and nothing better to do.It does make for a very pleasant half hour with my baby daughter but would probably get the same result from pointing out and naming things in the various relaxation and meditational youtube videos showing calming scenes of waterfalls, fish in an aquarium etc.

keeps my one year old entertained
I bought this for my 12mth old to support her language development whilst being entertained! It did hold her interest and is perfectly pitched for her stage of development. There's no story to follow as such, its a series of objects/picture sequences. Similar to the baby Einstein series but this is with a lady saying the words and doing the signs - in a fun and engaging way. My little girl loves the animals and other objects. She also quickly picked up on some words and signs (with our reinforcment). There is a parent tutorial on the DVD which we loosely follow but mainly it keeps her entertained for 20 mins or so whilst I get ready in a morning!! In terms of language development its a straighforward -common sense approach so nothing remarkable that you're probably not already doing yourself at home (with the addition of baby signs). A bit pricey for something that seems low budget and very similar to baby einstein (that are alot cheaper). However it keeps her entertained and she loves it, so money well spent for educational fun!!

ottimo
