Stallone's thoughts on diet and exercise
This is a really readable book, essentially Stallone's thoughts on diet and exercise that he is setting down on paper for family and, well, anyone that is interested in these things, and it really is very good. It should be, as Stallone is giving you the benefit of his own experience of various diets and training regimes over the span of his career in the movies. As a result this is part biography and part training and diet plans but the narrative flows throughout and its both interesting and motivating to read it. What I liked the most was probably a certain element of realism which features from early, early in the book.So Stallone talks about how some readers will be turning forty and discovering they cant live as they once did smoking, physically slacking and beginning to give up on any dreams they might have had earlier in life, that resonated, but he also writes that he appreciates younger readers could be dismissive of that thinking, as he may have been too when he was younger. He also talks in a pretty body positive way, saying that you may not get into action movie shape but you will be fitter and healthier by following his work out plans and diet, that you could be "fat" and yet out live an inactive "thin" person if you take as little as ten minutes activity/exercise three times a day. The plans in the book actually build from the simple, like this, to the really challenging, so I think this book could and should appeal to a broad readership. I loved his recommendation to give up dieting, points about diet fads, in particular that if any of them worked there would not be so much publishing of new diet plans repeatedly as it would a "problem solved" instead. The points about weight loss resulting from muscle wastage and water loss then replaced with fat when the diet plan was abandoned was interesting, as was some of the bad advice he had received such as eating yogurt which actually (combined with personal hubris) resulted in a terrible lifting injury. It could be as easily enjoyed by people who are not planning on applying the training knowledge too, as it is a readable biography too, full of details I never knew and found interesting (did you know that Stallone's delivery of dialogue is not a style of speech but an impediment for instance, I even found details on how gyms and training were not the norm before the advent of what is today's fitness and training cultures). One thing I would say is that Stallone does infuse a lot of really positive thinking, dont allow rejections or the pitfalls of life to finish you off, which is perhaps understandable when you read just how many challenges he had early in his career but I know that this could grate on some readers and test their patience. It isnt too bad but it is there, what I would say is that it is meant more as a motivation boost, like a trainer or coach or mentor in one of his movies.

For people who NEED to improve their lives
I was going to give 4 star because it isn't quite the encyclopoedia I thought it was going to be, but, it is what it says on the cover to be fair and more in other ways.It essentially covers the basics of working out and diet that will get you in shape and keep you healthy. Nothing more, nothing less. What I give it 5 stars for is the biographical and mindset parts. Part 1 is basically Stallones life story which is inspiring to say the least, he didn't come from wealth and wasn't thrown opportunities, he has made things happen, a key lesson of the entire book. The last part is more on his outlook and basic life advice which you can tell he has lived by and made him who he is.Beginner: highly recommendAdvanced: I wouldn't buy for the workout or diet part but would still recommend for the 50% of the book that is bio / life philosophy."I didn't hear no bell!"

My exercise bible.
Rather than picking up a magazine with a generic male model doing ab work, use this from a man with well over 30 years of training. Sly was quite fit in Rocky, skinny in Escape to Victory, super-fit in the eighties, huge in Rambo III, skinny in Daylight, fat in Copland, and super-fit again in Rocky Balboa. He certainly knows what works about re-shaping ones body. There are about 60 pages (207 altogether) with photographs of Sly showing us his exercises. It is aimed at people who use weights in gyms as it shows him on a Smith machine, calve machine, leg press machine etc. However there are enough exercises that can be done at home such as lunges, upright rows, shrugs, tricep dips and many others. What impressed me most was his rejection of diets and the latest fads including the Atkins diet and Body for Life (although he does agree with a lot). If Sly has problems with them then that's good enough for me, having failed miserably on the last lifestyle. Sly's book also emphasises that everyone is different and should be happy in their own skin without sounding preachy, although we can get a better body.Having grown up in the eighties I thought Sly would be pumping iron 12 hours a day and its so refreshing to hear how this is not true and that he does have a life. It made me feel good about myself and I enjoy my exercising more.

The Holy Grail
I've had this book since I was 19 years old and first starting lifting weights. I love the way it's written and it feels like a companion along for the journey. This book teaches you that fitness doesn't come from fad diets, it demands a certain lifestyle that is not only achievable but totally in your own hands. It's been ten years since I bought this and it will always have a place amongst my collection. it teaches you all the basics of nutrition, lifting and also has some interesting insights into Sly's career, mindset, and film timeline. As a huge fan of his I adore this book and can't recommend it enough.

Poor quality paper but good content. Expensive
Bought as gift for fanatical fan. She loved the book, I was disappointed with quality of paper. I'm all for recycling but paper could have been better. Content was good though if you like the man.
