I found the illustrations in this book dark, and the print too small for comfortable reading
I was disappointed by this book. I usually like the Osprey series, as they present a great deal of material in a short, readable format, with diagrams illustrating various battles and the tactics employed therein. Unfortunately, I found the illustrations in this book dark, and the print too small for comfortable reading. This was especially true of the battle illustrations, which could have been very good had they been twice as big as they were. Instead, the book has a cramped feeling about it. Generally, I love reading about military tactics used in actual battles, but I just could not follow the diagrams.

well Nicolle is the master - one cannot beat his expertise on all aspects of medieval warfare - his massive books on archeological material are fundamental - as always the illustrations here are excellent

Not terrible, but not great either
I expected a lot more of interest here, it being an osprey title and I own over a 100 of them and am pretty used to the format they use. But I have noticed in the last few years the artwork has stayed good but the textual content has gotten more shallow.

Good Introduction to The Infantry Revolution
Good popular history. Richly illustrated, competently written review of the Infantry Revolution of the Late Middle Ages. Covers most of the bases, but rather oddly has only limited discussion of the Hussite armies. For the general reader, not the professional history

Educational summary
Good coverage of a wide timeframe and geographies. Excellent review of Italian city states to Scottish schiltrons which can link to more specific Osprey titles. Bibliography to take your interest further

Not worth the money
A big disappointment. I don't think it lives up to its title or its sub-title. I didn't find much about tactics in it and I didn't find much about new infantry or new weapons either. Except that there are bits about handguns and artillery. If you know next to nothing about mediaeval infantry you will learn something from this book. If you already know something about the subject I think you will be disappointed. As is normal for these Osprey booklets it is small but that is known and expected. I hoped that it would give an up-to-date assessment of current academic notions of infantry use, tactics and weaponry in the late 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. A kind of infantry centric "pocket Verbruggen" for the 21st century. Nowhere near! Instead it gives the impression of sitting on the academic fence so as not to be open to the slightest criticism. Except for the criticism that it doesn't give the non-academic interested reader anything other than a short general introduction. There are bits of information and most of the pictures are useful, but the battle plans are small enough to make you squint and the 'artwork' drawings of supposed bird's eye views of battles are (for me) a waste of paper and ink.So save your money. If you are desperate to see for yourself look it up in a library.

Osprey

Adequate survey
Neither revolutionary nor inaccurate. Merely a survey. Adequate.
