Great fun!
Bought this for a Dutch friend- he was tickled pink with it.Introduced him to the phrase âhunky doryâ which was a hoot.

A fun, easy, yet informative read
I enjoyed reading this short and easily-accessible book a lot. It goes through lots of of short phrases which are defined clearly and succinctly, with a brief historical origin of it where known. The simple illustrations every few pages are fun (and often pretty funny) too! There's a short chapter on cockney rhyming slang which, whilst I'm a Londoner (although admittedly not a cockney!), I've always found really very strange or a bit weird (with the odd exceptions which are well-known, or even within common parlance nowadays)!Anyway, enjoy!

Offensive / sexist terms included
If the book includes some really derogatory terms for women- which it does- it had beetter say that up front! Not just "silly" ones, but really nasty and deplorable. Bought for a teenager and definitely not reinforcing those ideas in their mind.

I feel seen! Too accurate
As a brit I was lured into seeing how accurate or far fetched this was. I did not expect to realise how much of this is true to life! Really explains to me why non native english speakers really dont have a clue about what I am on about! Fantastic book, amazingly illustrated, keep up the great work Jeff!

basic book, avoid
Bought for family member in north america expecting it to be more comprehensive for the price. It is very basic, and they will not be any more enlightened any more than watching reruns of coronation street from this book. I missed the return window, otherwise would of returned. Avoid at all costs.

Two peoples separated by a common language...
The old joke has it that the Brits and the Americans are two peoples separated by a common language. This quick introduction to British slang proves the point in hilarious fashion. Jeff Watson has the details in "Fancy a Cuppa?"This short paperback runs through the most common British slang, pairing it with the American equivalent. There are more than a few hilarious sight gags and stories along the way. Very well recommended to those who cross the pond or are addicted to British TV.

Want to have fun? Have a cuppa and laugh !
What a funny and informative book this is. I enjoyed it tremendously and learnt a lot about the way Britons use slang. There is one spelling mistake, which should not be in a book about language:in the Table of Contents, the last item is spellt "Glossery" instead of "Glossary". Ironically one line below the same word is spelled correctly. The publisher /author should make sure things like this do NOT happen. Not in a book like this.

Enjoyable, informative...
I quite enjoyed this little book. Its surprising how much slang is actually the same on either side of the pond. But you cant go wrong reading this, esp if you are planning to visit the UK. The cockney rhyme slang is especially interesting, though I'm not sure you would recall much were to encounter a cockney person lol. AND the author included an index, quite useful. It's also very funny, this book. I highly recommend. đ

Brilliant book but missing material. Incomplete book
I get it that it wouldnât be possible to fit everything because some slang is never used and the book would be too big. However, thereâs certain words or phrases that is still used in British art, culture and music and itâs omitted. For example: 1 Yank, 2 Bullocks, 3 Palaver, 4 Oi, 5 âDonât give a tossâ. And thatâs just a few examples of what is missing from this book. This is unfortunate because it shows me that if you know nothing about British English, this book wonât be enough to prepare you for your travels to the UK or places like Bermuda. You will still struggle with the language. Also the book doesnât explain accents. Itâs a very good book but it has its limitations.
