A lovely game, possibly better than the original
I'm writing this review as someone who has played and enjoyed the original version of Santorini. First off, this game is not an expansion for Santorini and it's not a repackaging shell of the exact same game.I love that this was NOT a repackaging of the exact same game with a New York shell. The game plays differently. The basic mechanism of move then build and different character powers are there, but your power changes each turn you play and you have a hand of cards to choose from. There is strategy in which card you pick because it determines your power for that turn, but also the order you play in. The skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty are a nice twist to the game as well.I think it helped to have played the original version and really understand the basic mechanism (move then build) and movement rules, but I imagine people who are new to the game wouldn't have problems and would also enjoy the game on its own. You don't have to have played the original to have fun with this game. The game plays well with 2 and 3 players. We haven't tried more, but it is nice that 4 and 5 players have their own player tokens. In the original game if there's 4 + players you have to play on teams.I love the design and art of the game with its beautiful art deco cards and metallic foils on the box and cards. I also like the character design and movements like the pushy cop or the subway worker who can get out of obstacles by going "under" the buildings. This game is well worth the money! And a great value for the price point ($15). Tbh I think I might like Santorini: New York better than the original Santorini game.

Great gift
Got this for a board game lover for their birthday. They love it and play it often with both family and friends. Plays well as both a two person game and with more although so far we've played it more with 4+. Great combo of esthetic visuals and fun game to play with a little bit of a coop feel and competitiveness aspect too

An awesome sequel
Rather than being Santorini plus a little more, this new iteration of the game is more like a whole new game with just a little of Santorini left in it. Okay, maybe a little more than a little bit, but there's definitely a lot more to this game, and it is its own beast.Due to its various roles you can mix and match (only one of which, the Engineer, is required each game) almost every game you play can feel different for a very, very long time. If that's what you want ... in these types of games it can also be fun to repeatedly play a particular combo again and again to discover everything that set has to offer. It might be second only to Santorini itself in this respect.I feel there is a little too much going on to give this game as a gift to your average non-gamer family ... especially if a gamer isn't there to get them through the rules. I feel original Santorini is better in that respect. But for families who already play that level of game, Santorini New York would be a great next step.
