Works for garlic and ginger, easy to clean.
Works well if you need to make a ginger or garlic paste. If garlic cloves are too small, it will be tricky to use them up without risking your fingers though, but for decently sized ones it is perfect. Can be cleaned by simply putting under running hot water - much easier than a garlic press.

Significantly smaller than claimed; one of three possible grater options
A recently tried recipe required grating a substantial amount of fresh ginger for which a microplane was used, not for the first time, but previously only for much smaller amounts. The result this time was a grated finger, a torn fingernail and a considerable amount of wastage to help avoid further injury etc. An online search for the most recommended alternative was this "Kyocera Ceramic Grater, Ceramics/Plastic, White, 15.4 x 10 x 2.4 cm" that was suggested by two different sources; the alternative was a similar design in glass. The quoted dimensions for the product are grossly inaccurate as it is a 95mm circle and only about 20mm high, including the silicone ring beneath that makes it non-slip during use. Rather than being held tightly to prevent it moving as you grate, a light grip will suffice on a slippery surface. The model supplied is the CY-10 but there is also the CD-18 which is a larger version of the same design and includes a plastic scraper to clean between the projections and a handheld CMG-25 that looks like a microplane but using the same system as this but more widely-spaced; neither of the three match the quoted 15.4 x 10 x 2.4 cm dimensions. Each is designed for a different group of foods. It is suggested that metal tools not be used for cleaning and a stiff brush was available and used and found to be effective - quite well it would work with ginger fibres is not presently known (see closing comment below). This is said to be ideal for ginger and the similar galengal as well as elephant garlic (if and when you can find it) as the grinding surface comprises a circle of about 60mm in diameter with multiple moulded sharply-angled pyramids that grate effectively but with almost zero chance of cuts etc. There is a surrounding rim in which to collect the pulp and juices, especially of ginger, that can help flavour a recipe.Due to the nature of ginger tubers which have fibres running along the tuber, it needs to be grated across the tuber and never along it using a circular grating motion to minimise their length and number as many will supposedly be trapped among the projections. Having used all the fresh ginger purchased for the recipe, none remains for testing and there is nothing else likely to be cooked or baked in the very near future for which fresh ginger is required; a new season potato was used as a test substitute.

Works really well
Small but very effective, simple to use and easy to clean, like that all the stringy bits of the ginger and left behind. Easy to store due to its small footprint.

The best
It’s really easy to grate garlic and ginger, safer than metal graters as it’s not too sharp. The bottom has a siliconey texture so it stops from slipping. 10/10 Japanese quality
