Worth knowing: The red dwarf banana, also called scarlett banana or red Thai banana, develops the most beautiful flower of all dwarf bananas. The flower is large, bright red and lives for about 2 months. The plant itself grows to a maximum height of 2 metres with slender, bright green, about 80 cm long leaves on the slim pseudostem. It is easily grown and cultivation is completely problem-free – it's the ideal banana plant for pot or tub cultivation indoors.

Origin: The Musa coccinea is indigenous to India and Asia (Thailand).

Propagation: The seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Leave the seeds to soak in water at room temperature or hot water (in a Thermos flask) before sowing. Spread the seeds out on cultivation soil or moist coconut fibre afterwards, cover thinly and move in a warm spot. Ideal temperatures range between 20°-25°C. Keep moist, do, however, avoid waterlogging.

Place / Light: The dwarf banana loves bright to full sunny places. The only thing to do is to shelter the plant a little bit from blazing midday sun.

Care: The rhizome producing banana shrub grows quickly in loose soil, rich in nutrients. Supply with tub plant fertilizer every 3 weeks in spring and summer. It tolerates temperatures up to 40°C.

Winter period: Several leaf tips will turn brown in winter. This, however, is completely normal. Move in a bright spot during winter, water somewhat less and choose a location with temperatures between 5°-12°C. The plant does tolerates temperatures up to 25°C as well, should then, however, be sprayed often. Cut off the pseudostem shortly above ground when grown outdoors and cover the stump with mulch. Perhaps put a wooden box over it too.
