Great book for younger children
Most likely, the best book on the market for children learning chess. The really key point about it is that it doesn't just teach the moves but educates children on chess logic. My children loved the story format whilst playing out the moves as we went along (probably a bit too impatient to do all the practice in-between chapters). As one reviewer noted, much of the material is available for free on Richard James' website but I would still recommend the book for the story, the "subversive" humour and cartoons. (Note - there is a fair amount of comic violence and emphasis on the war game element of chess - some adults may not be that keen on this but I think most kids love it).I would particularly recommend for children between about 6 and 9 who have not played chess before.

not just for kids.
I am over 40 and a new chess player, 2 weeks to be exact and this little gem is really good at introducing new adult players to chess. It is written in a story format but i think most beginners will find a lot is covered. Obviously this is a beginners book and does not go too indepth, but this one, in my opinion will give you a basic grasp of the game and help you decide if chess is for you.

a great little book
It can be used by adults as well as kids. Tells you all the basic ways of getting checkmate and if you lose your queen it is curtains as they say and you might as well quit at that stage. The problem is that it takes each piece in isolation, and it is a lot different, when all the men and pawns are present on a 8 by 8 board. Great way to understand Nash game mathematics.

Not an easy read for a 7 year old.
Sadly this is not the right book for me. My 7 year old daughter and I had our first game of chess thanks to the basic instructions that came with the chess set rather than this book. I can see what the author is trying to achieve, by creating the story around two children playing the game, but I found the writing style didn't flow. I honestly can't say this is a page turner. See photograph, which should illustrate why I struggled reading this. However, to be fair I haven't had the chance to read other chess books to compare this to. Perhaps I was too optimistic when I brought that book thinking that it would demystify Chess.

For 12-13 years olds
My 8 yr kid is not able to understand by reading the book herself. I am having to read it to her. More suitable for 12-13 years olds.

"CHESS FOR KIDS" a wonderful introduction for children.
A most readable, concise, and fun introduction to the teaching of young children to play chess. The book is designed or at least is suitable for young children and is a great way to get them aware of the chess boards and the pieces. For the average young child it creates the game of chess as fun and not some dull intellectual game for adults. If they use it properly they will be able to play a game (and win as the title states) that will give them the ability (and hopefully interest) to further their game and become a reasonable good or even brilliant player. Many might not continue but at least they will have had the experiences of having fun with a chess set and play with a bit of insight. An excellent start for any child who show a slight or more interest in that fascinating game of wooden board and men.I highly recommend it for you young child (and it might even prove useful and interesting to many parents!)
