Super creepy!
The cool thing about this concept is they didn’t have to over do it for it to be creepy. Although I think some scenes were a bit over done, overall I was scared AF and engaged the entire time. A really great thriller to get your anxiety pumping and a concept that’ll keep you thinking after the movie. The acting was very well done in my opinion. Everyone played their role super well. For some reason scary movies always get rated so low so had to support this one because it did was it was meant to do - scare me.

Very enjoyable "you have 7 days to live" type supernatural horror
Smile (2022) – an American supernaturala horror film that is based on a 2020 short film, _Laura Hasn’t Slept_, both written and directed by Parker Finn. The movie centers on Dr. Rose Cotter (played by Sosie Bacon), a therapist working at a psychiatric ward. The movie starts with Rose having a horrifying encounter with a patient, Laura Weaver (Caitlin Stasey), a grad student who is not only traumatized by having seen her art history professor die by suicide right in front of her, but also for days afterwards seeing a creature that takes the form of smiling people Laura knows, tormenting her and warning Laura she is soon going to die. Laura is quite aware of how she sounds but finds it hard to not be extremely frightened (as among other things, only she can see the creature). To Rose’s horror, after what looks like Laura having a severe mental health crisis as she falls to the floor and looks to be stumbling away from something Rose can’t see but Laura is terrified of, Rose soon sees Laura standing calmy and smiling very widely and creepily…then cutting her own throat so she dies. Thus begins a _Ring_ type horror story, a sort of “you have seven days to live” thing, where the main character first tries to come to terms with the curse and the creature even being real, find an ally who will believe them and hopefully help them, frantically try to find a way to save themselves, all while the creature increasingly torments them. Rose is far from a dumb person and with a friend very capably researches the origins of the creature, if anyone has survived the creature before, and trying to come up with ways to if not save herself, then to protect others from the creature. If you have seen films like the _Ring_ films or _It Follows_, the overall type of plot should seem very familiar. The victim has only set amount of time to try to save themselves, the creature ramps up more and more the scares prior to the end, the victim as much wants to save others as save themselves, for they know that after they die others will be next, and the victim tries with allies to find novel solutions to defeat the curse/creature.Tension was good, pacing was good, some good jump scares, I liked how it wasn’t always obvious at first that a given scene was in fact an encounter with the creature, I appreciate the great lengths Rose went to to try to defeat the creature. There is an animal that does (to me predictably) come to a bad end. The ending was a bit ambiguous but pretty common for horror films. Acting and casting were all great as were production values. I appreciate that even tertiary characters to the story were well written, were good actors, and were grounded.

Excellent movie that didn’t quite stick the landing
Excellent movie. I really enjoyed the creepiness and overall feeling of isolation in the movie. Some of the imagery really sticks with you and isn’t overly done. Characters for the most part act like people would in a real situation. Not many moments where you are yelling at the screen or rolling your eyes. The only complaint I have about the movie is unfortunately the ending. Typical for the genre, it ends without any resolution. Note to Hollywood, if you make a good entertaining film, people will gladly pay to see the next one. You don’t have to deliver an unfinished movie so people will be on the hook for another. This seems to only affect the Horror Genre. You don’t see romantic comedies having the couple break up in the end, so audiences will have to see part 2 to see if they end back up together again. You don’t watch action flicks and have the hero think he killed the bad guy only to have the last frame of the movie having the killer slit the heroes throat and walking away. You won’t find out how the killer gets caught unless you pay for another ticket. You don’t see that scenario in other genres because people would feel cheated. I don’t understand why it’s considered acceptable for horror.Let me go into the ending and why it wasn’t satisfying.Spoilers for those who care.Throughout the entire movie we are told that the entity needs trauma to pass to another victim. It mentally wears down its prey until it can basically possess them and kills the host in a horrific way in front of an audience. The person who witnesses this apparent violent suicide gets the curse of this entity passed onto them. This is a great premise and what kept me interested. The conclusion of the movie sees the main character finally succumbing to the entity who possesses her, causing her to light herself on fire as her friend watches. The cycle continues, Cut to credits. My wife and I were talking about some of the better scenes of the movie and how we enjoyed it up until the end. We had the same reaction. It felt unfinished. To me the far superior and more satisfying way to end the movie would be to tie in the main characters suicidal mother. She confronts the fact that her mother killed herself by overdosing. She already established that the entity needs to cause a horrific death to its host with someone witnessing the act in order for this thing to pass through another victim. Why not have the lead character decide to kill herself the same way her mother did? A quiet unspectacular overdose with no witnesses to the event as it happens. Thematically it would give her mothers death some meaning and take all power away from the creature. If that ending is too dark and you want to leave audiences happier, you can do the same ending, have her heart stop, thus ending the cycle and have her friend perform CPR bringing her back. Everyone is happy and the monster defeated. If you want to have one final scare, jump to another city or country and replay the original scenario, a doctor treating a patient who goes from full on terror to a fear inducing smile before credits roll. One story completed while leaving audiences questioning whether this entity survived, are there multiple creatures like this or was the protagonist wrong about how it spreads. To me far more effective than just “well that happened, see you next time”.Lately I have been disappointed by horror movies. Black Phone was slow paced and offered no real thrills. Megan was more comedic than scary. Smile had me creeped out and invested in what was going on. It is worth a watch but like I said, the ending took something away that could have elevated it further.

Empaquetado excelente
