Business classic
Great business growth story from the early pre-Wal-mart days upto around the mega machine of the 90s with lots of insight into retail business practice from Sam Walton himself and lots of contributions from his associates. Remains a fascinating, undated, and easy read whilst not delving too deep into financial and technical understanding. Gives a thorough insight into his philosophy and methods. To my mind this book focuses more on the business story rather than the personal glorification that can be found in some other business bibles reflecting the reported humble nature of the man, making it an excellent read for students of business and those looking for inspiration in their own retailing or business practices. At times some of the balance is not quite right, it would have been nice to see more insight from lower level employees and an international perspective on Wal-mart's later growth. It does touch fairly indirectly upon some of the criticisms of Wal-mart, the impact on smaller traders, labour relations, and the impact of cheap food on consumers and suppliers, but clearly these are from the perspective of the founders and more independent criticism can be found elsewhere.

This is one of the best, if not the best book about creating a ...
I couldn't believe his business earned more than Warren Buffet and Bill Gates combined !Sam was at his deathbed when he wrote this book Made in America. This is one of the best, if not the best book about creating a business and management. I discovered that there are no tricks or secrets to become a billionaire and yet so few people make it. Here is an advise from Sam, the best business person in human’s history.More reviews on my website http://adamwojnar.comRule 1. Commit to your business. Believe in you needs more than anybody else. I think I overcome every single one of my personal shortcomings by the sheer passion I brought to my work.Rule 2. Share your profits with all your associates, and treat them as partners. In turn, they will treat you as a partner, and together you will all perform beyond your wildest expectations.Rule 3. Motivate your partners. Money and ownership alone aren’t enough. Constantly, day by day, think of new and more interesting ways to motivate and challenge your partners. Keep everybody guessing as to what your next trick is going to be. Don’t become too predictable.Rule 4. Communicate everything you possibly can see your partners. The more they know, the more they will understand. If you don’t trust your associate to know what’s going on, they’ll know you don’t really consider them partners.Rule 5. Appreciate everything your associates do for the business. A paycheck and stock option will buy one kind of loyalty. But all of us like to be told how much somebody appreciates what we do for him or her.Rule 6. Celebrate your successes. Find some humor in your failures. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Loosen up, and everybody around you will loosen up. Have fun. Show enthusiasm, always.Rule 7. Listen to everyone in your company. And figure out ways to get them talking. The folks on the front lines, the ones who actually talk to the customer, are the only ones who really know what’s going on out there.Rule 8. Exceed your customers’ expectations. If you do, they’ll come back over and over. Give them what they want, and a little more. Don’t make excuses, apologize. It’s really an eye opener. This book is amazing. You probably haven’t heard of it because no one is really bothered to market it better. It has a crappy picture on the front page and no marketing whatsoever. Don’t worry; marketing doesn’t usually represent real value. This book is real gem.More reviews on my website http://adamwojnar.com

The Ultimate Definition of The American Dream
Mr. Walton’s story is the embodiment of The American Dream. Nothing is impossible if you have the vision, the dedication to hone your craft despite the challenges of change and circumstance. Above all is the importance of being honest to yourself of the weaknesses you have and find the right people to work alongside with you.

impressive, interesting and informative
The autobiography of Sam Walton, a one-off in his life-time and something of a business guru. Sam enjoyed the retail business and spent his life immersed in its study and execution, building an empire of over 2000 stores. His account is homely and based on his small town upbringing and values, which never left him. It is enjoyable as a biography and, as such a good read - Sam Walton is a good talker and has an interesting tale to tell, but within it, there are many nuggets of business wisdom and much to learn from such as thinking small and making the customer the centre of the universe, as it were. We all talk about this, but rarely make a study of it, or practice, as much as Sam seems to have done. One could be cynical. and there is much criticism of his methods and practice, but I finished the book believing that this is a businessman one can learn from and emulate, to a great extent, without ever having to sell your soul. An impressive read that I enjoyed enormously.

Gripping Business Read
Love every page of this book, an exhilarating story following the adventure of one of the greatest entrepreneurs this earth has seen. It was so gripping I could barely put it down. I'm not a fast reader but finished it in under a week.Loved the way he interspersed other people's views of him and his ways in between his own thoughts. Very well writte book with a tremendous amount of ideas flowing through. Some great business success rules to pick up as well - for any business not just retailing and discounting.A great man because he put in 100% to what he saw as his mission in life and he rewarded all those around him so well.
