Upon reading Eli Saslow’s “Rising out of Hatred” which chronicles Derek Black’s liberation from White Nationalism I feel compelled to write a review.The specter of David Duke shaking Mahmood Ahmadinejad’s hand, Donald Trump standing next to Kim Jung-un, or Adolf Hitler walking along with Benito Mussolini invokes repulsion, arrogance, chauvinism, narcissism, and hatred. These characters represent everything a decent human being should not be and pose a threat to survival of humanity on the planet.While reading this book, I regularly came across the word “Stormfront.” This was the website created by Derek’s father. Derek was destined to take over the logistics and eventually replace his father as the administrator of the website and become the leading rational voice of White Nationalism.I had no idea that this website even existed. I visited Stormfront website out of pure curiosity. I read posts here and there and gained somewhat a general conception of the website’s ideological direction and its members’ philosophical sophistication and ultimately a little insight into the mindset of website’s members.While reading the posts, I realized there are many members obsessed with the term “Aryan.” The Aryan construct has always been linguistic, not racial as so many members on Stormfront erroneously assume. Aryan super tribes such as Scythians, Sarmatians, Medes, Persians, and Parthians dominated their adversaries by utilizing cavalry and archery. In expanding their dominance, they imposed their Indo-European language on the conquered people. The racial component emerged in 19th century in academia, and eventually penetrated to political circles to justify European Imperialism. It became a convenient tool for European Imperialists to justify their superiority over conquered people. The climax emerged in 1930s Germany with Hitler and his Fascist horde, and to some degree in contemporary politics with the global White Power Movement which Stormfront propagates. During the time that fascism and populist politics evolved into mass movements in Europe in 1920s, in the United States the New Clan emerged in response to massive immigration of displaced and impoverished Southern and Eastern European peasants. These immigrants did not speak English and were perceived as a threat to nativists. Ironically, some of their descendants are devout members of Stormfront and the White Nationalist movement.What Stormfront members need to learn from their “Aryan” heritage is what Cyrus the Great gave to humanity 2500 years ago, “the Cyrus Cylinder.” According to Neil MacGregor, former director of the British Museum, the cylinder was “the first attempt we know about running a society, a state with different nationalities and faiths.” The United Nations has declared the cylinder to be an “ancient declaration of human rights.”I will end this post by stating that logic is not within the parameters of a subjective observer of history and therefore not subjected to one’s preconceptions and biases. I hope Stormfront members someday find happiness in their lives and stop blaming other human beings for their own shortcomings. If Derek Black could free himself from his family’s psychological control and manipulation, I am certain many members of Stormfront website can do the same. It only makes our world a better place to live for all human beings.

I haven’t stopped thinking about this book since I finished reading it several days ago. I found myself totally obsessed as I read the the slow, and thoughtful transition of this young man from white nationalist leader to the courageous, awakened man he is today. Most importantly, someone who is now willing to fight for realjustice and equity, through sharing his knowledge and expertise of this quickly expanding sub-culture of white nationalism, and why, he believes, the country and many “closet racisits”, were ripe for a person like Trump to take the helm and promote it’s ideologies.This a very thoughtful, thoroughly researched, and well written book, that presented the slow indoctrination of Derek Black, into the white nationalist movement from the time he was a young child, and through his experiences at a mostly white, but extremely liberal, small Florida college. I was hoping, and was not disappointed, to understand the process, by which Derek, a thoroughly entrenched alt right extremist, could come to see the errors and misinformations that form the foundation of white nationalism. I think it is an important for those of us who have friends/ family, that lean into some of these racist ideas, to have an understanding of how we might start a dialogue with them. Do I think this will work for everyone? Sadly, absolutely not. Derek is an extremely intelligent, thoughtful, and most importantly curious person, open to new ideas and the science, when logically presented to him. There will always be those unwilling to listen to anything at odds with their entrenched beliefs, but, there are also many, like Derek, who will listen when presented with fact based logic. One other striking note is the value of being part of a diverse community, (his college), where we spend time with people from different cultures, religions, and “races”, allowing us to see the humanity and value of the individuals, not the stereotypes of the groups.I honestly think this should be required reading for high school and college, as a staring point for productive discussion of where we want to be as individuals and as a country.

Rising Out of Hatred is a tremendously powerful story relating the long progression of Derek Black as he delved into himself and didn't like what he saw--so he changed it. His courage and bravery in challenging himself as a white supremacist was no less than outstanding. Very inspirational book from a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
