The Sea Wolf [Blu-ray]

Prepare to Suspend Belief!
I liked the dialog the most. The mechanics of sailing and the costume changes I liked least but along with the supposed fight scenes were hilarious.Okay, here is a great study of how different films are today versus in 1940. Sorry to be picky butIda jumps into the SF Bay to escape two cops chasing her. She is later brought aboard the Ghost dripping wet in the clothes on her back. Yet after the Dr. revives here she appears on deck having located the ship's laundry, looking cover girl dressed perfect, not to mention the hair salon, same think. How did that happen?Leach knocks on her cabin door and she answers wearing an nightgown.Where did the nightgown come from ?Robinson will punch the writer hard in the gut and then resume a parlor room conversation with him. This unrealistic set up appears numerous times in the film.Stage drama requires the audience to accept some compromise but this sailing ship never heels. Indeed it seems to be on auto pilot as all the sailors mill around the deck in conversation with the captain.Oh and the official story about seal hunting, where is the equipment to render the seal into something? And if we are going to steal from our brother, who is tracking the brother's ship? And how in the middle of the Pacific does the brother find the Ghost? And what is the source of income for this vessel?Oh well, pick pick pick, Idid enjoy the exchanges between Robinson and the writer, this was prelude to Robinson in Key Largo, what is it that Rocko wants, More, yeah paper boy, more, more....the more interesting story might be how Lupino and Garfield find a new life on a small island in the Pacific

Fantastic movie!! Right up there with greats like 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre'!
Having seen most of this many years ago on late night movie TV, I had hoped to find this gem for years. Though I missed some of the first part of the movie back then, it was still a truly great film, even though it was an old, grainy print, shown on late night television. After years of searching for a DVD of 'The Sea Wolf', I had pretty much given up, when earlier this year I was delighted to not only find the movie, but better still, to see it available on 'blu-ray'!On top of that, almost 15 minutes have been added to the movie, which had not been seen by most people, and were only left out, as Warner Brothers felt the movie might be too long for theatres, otherwise. And finally, if you like, you can hear the radio broadcast acted out which is also included as the main extra.Having just watched this last night, the transfer to blu-ray is excellent, regarding both video and audio. Like many great movies and books, it may take five or ten minutes to grab you, but when it does, what an amazing journey on the bleak, dark ship run by the cruel and clever captain and his miserable, captured crew!I honestly believe this movie easily ranks among such greats as 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre', 'Casablanca' and any top Warner Brother's classic. But this movie is much different in a unique way- the characters and their dealings with one another being more complex, dangerous, and with the fear of suspense and risk always in the air. After watching this, I felt this easily deserved to be ranked among the top 100 movies of all time.

Mild violence of a character study aboard a sealer. Unnecessary romance included.
This is for the Warner Archive DVD release in 2017. There are no extras, except for a trailer, and subtitles. Rather pricey for a DVD with little extra. It is full screen b&w, but is the 100 minute version, other versions chop 10 minutes of the film. The violent is supposed to be violent -- but it isn't, at least by today's standards. There are some fights, but it I all mild, and often the fights are off screen and only implied. Though I've read the novel many times, I've forgotten much of it. However I know the role of Ruth (Ida Lupino) was not in the novel. And Alexander Knox, who plays Van Wyden, should have had higher billing, as his role is large than that of John Garfield, who plays Leach. The star is Edward G. Robinson as Wolf Larsen and he seems to be almost right for the role. Like the original Larsen in the novel, he is a reader of heavy books but remains a brute and a savage. Self-educated, he crawled up to command by his own force of nature. Yet he remains an interesting character. The film has several unnecessary scenes set in San Francisco that were not in the novel, but at least it includes the collision of the ferryboat with a freighter in the fog. The film is a character study, a study of characters sizing each other up, as each tries to manipulate each other with lies and violence. It is a study of power, force of will, and control of others. Van Wyden is interesting in that he is able to face down Larsen without losing his temper and is courageous in telling Larsen directly to his face what he is - without fear. Larsen respects that and sees that though Van Wyden is a cultured man of a writer of useless novels (Larsen prefers non-fiction) he is no coward. There are, of course, plot lines not found in the novel. Van Wyden survives in the novel; in the film he dies with Larsen. In the novel I don't think Leach, and definitely not Ruth, exist, but they survive as a romantic couple -- a distraction for those who prefer Jack London's novel. Furthermore, in the novel, the Ghost was an actual sealer, but here it is revealed that Larsen steals other ships' catches and does no actual seal hunting. Though a classic for some, I find the inclusion of Ida Lupino's character a distraction, and violence in the film is mild compared to what Jack London wrote.

Meglio comandare all'Inferno che servire in Paradiso
