Fair Isle Sweaters Simplified: Philosopher's Wool

Fair Isle with Philosophers Wool
This is an excellent Fair Isle book, although not a complete guide to this particular subject matter. This couple is fully dedicated to all things sheep, producing wool and dyeing it to knit their sweaters, which are beautiful. The sweaters can be knit to any size and are photographed in all sizes in many colorways. A brief explanation of dyeing their Philosopher's Wool is also provided. This book does not provide information about designing Fair Isle patterns - if you are seeking that information look elsewhere. For a comprehensive look at one designers approach in many sizes and colorways this is a magnificent library addition.

Ageless Fair Isle designs and patterns
Philosopher's Wool has a unique method of knitting Fair Isle which avoids long and cluttering floats. It's clearly illustrated in the book, which, IMO, is a definite plus. Included in the book are sweater patterns, most of which have construction methods. Charts are clear and comprehensive. Colors are marvelous. I highly recommend it.

Great Fairisle/Steeking Resource
Recently, fairisle and steeking has become the in-thing. I purchased this book a few years ago, as well as the video. I had never knit fairisle before and I knit a sweater and steeked it (with my husbands moral support). The book is clearly written and easy to follow. I would recommend it to anyone.

Good book if you're interested in knitting fair isle sweaters
A good book that has a lot of information on knitting fair isle sweaters. I plan to knit a few of the patterns (but not using Philosopher's Wool because it is very expensive! Take a look at knitpicks.com for reasonable prices on wool) The patterns in the book use a one stitch steek to bridge the armholes or the center front of a cardigan. Most patterns call for a steek of 5-12 stitches and I will modify the patterns to use a more traditional 7 stitch steek. The patterns are nicely done but they use worsted or bulky weight yarn, not fingering weight, like most fair isle patterns. The first 10 or so pages are dedicated to the Philosopher's Wool history and have nothing to do with knitting. I would reccomend this book for intermediate knitters who want to learn fair isle knitting.

Well written book.
Good book but the patterns are a little old fashioned for my liking. That said it is still an interesting well written book.

Ann makes fair isle knitting very easy - I am on the way to completing my first cardigan and although it is not a pattern from the book - I am using her method of steeking. I will do anything to avoid purling in fair isle!
