Veganomicon (10th Anniversary Edition): The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook

This essential tome just got even more essential-er
Do you have the old edition? Are you considering whether or not to get the 10th anniversary edition? I initially vacillated back and forth, trying to decide whether or not to do it. I generally don't like wasting money, and try to avoid unnecessary repurchasing of things I already have. Ultimately, obviously, I did get the new edition, and was very glad I did so.Let's take a step back and say that the cookbooks of Isa Chandra Moskowitz, a number of which were co-written with Terry Hope Romero, changed my life. I've been a vegetarian/vegan for a while, and I've owned different of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks, and I've always cooked, but something about Ida and Terry's stuff is on a whole other level. It's like the apex of the form. The book Isa Does It was the first cookbook I owned where I just went through and cooked almost everything, one after another. The results always seemed to range from "Unbelieveably Good" to "Really, Really Good." I love the diversity of the recipes, including curries, nori roles, pies, pizzas, tofu/tempeh/seitan creations, comfort foods to fancy stuff, quick and easy meals to more involved. And the books are charmingly written, the attitude best described as punk, urban, DYI, and funny, and I appreciate that this attitude was never entirely lost/abandoned as time went on and mainstream acceptance must have been a lure. After finding their work, I started cooking a whole lot more, and now I'd say that cooking is a bit of a hobby. If I had the energy, I'd cook every night. Their cookbooks were instrumental in that development. The new edition is gorgeous. It's a nice, sturdy hardcover without a slip cover. The cover illustration looks great -- an ornate V immersed in various growy green things, all in different shades of green. The front and rear cover is glossy, and the inside pages are of a higher quality than before. The formatting has been changed; in essence, the new edition looks very similar to Isa Does It and The Superfun Times Vegan Holidary Cookbook, which makes sense because the copyright page says that the book was designed by Laura Palese, who, as it turns out, also designed Isa Does It and Superfun Times. Most recipes now occupy their own page. The recipes themselves are easy to read and are well organized, and include mini-intros, notes, tips, and icons. It looks like some of the recipe's mini-intros have been revised. The Amazon blurb claims that 250 recipes have been revised, and the text now includes 25 new recipes. There's new intros written by both the authors, but it still includes the old one. And there's the addition of photographs, which, frankly, adds a lot. I'm not sure if they were also taken by Vanessa Rees or Joshua Foo, who worked on Isa Does It and Superfun Time (for some reason I couldn't find the photograph attributions in this new edition), but they are similar in style and are beautiful. My only gripe (if you can even call it that), is that I prefer cookbook bindings/spines that are designed to lay flat. Isa Does It has this type of binding/spine, but Superfun Times and the Veganomicon doesn't either. It's nice when you don't have to put a stack of CDs or whatever on the corner to try to keep it down, etc. But the old edition didn't have it either, and it's be no means a deal breaker.I highly recommend this new edition. If you are new to Ida/Terry and don't have the old edition, this is the one to get of the two. If you have the old edition and are considering getting the new one, do it. It isn't essential to switch, I mean, you will survive just fine with the old one, but the changes are aesthetically and content-lly substantial enough to justify a new purchase, as it feels like an entirely new book. Some call this The Joy of Vegan Cooking. Well, this essential tome just got even more essential-er.

BUY THIS BOOK!
I bought this book as a gift for a colleague, but was so captivated that I bought other copies for my self and family members! The photos are enticing and the recipes themselves are divine! Isa's wit and commentary is the icing on the cake, pun intended! This book and the How Not to Die cookbook (by Dr. Michael Greger) are the only two cookbooks anyone would need!

Great Book, Great Cooks!
I received this today, and have to admit I was surprised to see a 4 star review. This is a beautiful cookbook with loads of information and updated recipes. Realize there were no kale recipes in the original and this flaw has been fixed thoroughly. If you have other Isa cookbooks, you will see a few similar recipes, but most of these are fabulous and I can't wait to try them. Because I have allergies, I always have to alter the recipes slightly, but I can tell you that bones of every recipe I've ever tried of these authors stands up to the indiginities my allergies cause! They teach enough here to allow anyone from a novice to an expert to learn how to prepare wonderful, nutritious food that will stun and amaze your vegan and nonvegan friends. I will be taking a few of these dishes to a vegan potluck at the end of the month, and I know I don't even have to try them first! Isa and Terry have convinced from their other books that they are great and inventive cooks who have mastered the art of vegan cooking. I looked at the original ten years ago and it looked too complicated. This one is not at all intimidating and is a joy to hold in my hands.

Good and bad
Mostly good recipes, but also some poor ones. Initially I thought the book was excellent - thick paper, good pictures, etc.. One problem is that the binding is terrible and I’m quickly ending up with lots of loose pages. Another problem is that the type on the ingredients lists are so small that the fractions require a magnifying glass to distinguish, for example, between 1/3 and 1/2. So, 4 stars for the contents and 1 star for the binding and printing.

Truly great vegan cookbook
As a vegetarian for 30 years, and then vegan for 8, I know my way around the kitchen. This is a terrific book, offering fairly simple, interesting ideas for all sorts of vegan dishes. The authors are only a little chatty, not obnoxiously so. Very much enjoying using the book and highly recommend it even for those who might already have a number of other vegan cookbooks.

Love it!
I don’t usually write reviews but felt compelled to in this case. As a new convert to Veganism I wanted to find a recipe book that would be suitable for a novice but also have enough intriguing and suitable recipes to last me for years. I’m pleased to say this book didn’t disappoint. I love the first section that has amazingly useful hints and tips on cooking vegetables correctly and what varies terms mean (sauté, sear etc). I have made two recipes from this book already and both my meat eating boyfriend and myself really enjoyed them!I also like the sauce and dip section as I was eager to find a vegan sour cream and cheese sauce recipe too. This book has it all and I would recommend to anyone!

Disappointing
Disappointing - I brought this after reading a series of recommendations. As an 'enquiring' vegan I found the lack of pictures disappointing and the range of recipes just not there. The recipes seemed a bit dated and lacked general appeal.

Great again cookbook but...
...the version I received was the American one. I don't know why but with a different measuring system I had to refresh myself on what everything was. There's no reason they couldn't send the UK version of which there is.
