I have same question, width of gap so i can see if fits my gate?

The gap is 13/16" (but would likely accept 7/8") I have an Iris 8-panel dog playpen and the panels fit in perfectly. However, to really stabilize the pen, I needed 16 feet (2 per panel) and as my large-breed puppy grew, I added a mesh top which really stabilized the pen.

What is the exact width of the opening insertion slot?

Figure 2 does not show the opening width

Do these prevent from the dog opening a free standing fence

It may depend on the size of the dog. My puppy was 35 pounds at 3 months and could knock the pen around, even with 16 feet. However, a mesh cover secured with extra bungee ball fasteners really firmed up the structure.
