E.R. Nurses: True Stories from America's Greatest Unsung Heroes

This is truly a great read.
This is truly a great read. I've been retired for ten years now, but my first job out of nursing school was at a Regional Trauma Center in SW Michigan. So many of the stories brought back memories of specific patients and crazy situations I hadn't thought of in a while. I've also been an EMT, an army medic and clinical specialist, and a Coast Guard corpsman. So the military section had a special meaning for me too. For me, most of the chapters produced either tears or laughter. The "above and beyond" things nurses do for their patients and families are some of the things I miss a lot. After finishing the book, I had an odd feeling for several days and thought it was due to remembering some of the tragedies I had witnessed. But it wasn't so much that, as it was the feeling of not being a part of something like that anymore. I've worked with some of the most dedicated, intelligent, irreverent, courageous, and talented people I've ever known. And I miss them every day. Nurses are yelled at, spit on, assaulted, overworked and exhausted - but will pick up extra shifts and still come in on time the next day. Those of you who are still working and counting the days till retirement, will miss all the great things you're doing now and all the great people who are so much a part of your life. Believe me.

Gripping
Very interesting, captivating even. A page turner. Most of the nurse's experiences in ERs, ICUs, and other medical facilities may be mundane albeit busy, depending upon the hospital, the shift, the patients they care for. If you're an ICU nurse in a covid unit, you're always under stress, always in danger of being infected. But even in medical units before covid, there must be mundane, routine duties. The authors spare the reader those routine stories, instead giving us first-hand accounts of memorable, extraordinary situations, which bring happiness or sorrow to the nurses whose stories are told. Patients lost, patients saved. Thankful to be a nurse, or wondering what they're doing in this line of work. The authors draw you in, making you identify with each nurse sharing their victories and their defeats.

This is a book that everyone should read!
I have had an appreciation for medical personnel from my experiences. This book was a series of very short stories told by nurses around the country. It was definitely an eye opener! So many things I never thought about or even considered! They might go from dealing with someone who died to someone who needs a sliver removed. So they have to put aside their feelings from the last patient to deal with the next one. It made me both laugh and cry.I thought about saying it should be required reading in high school, but I wonder if a young person would even understand.Thank you Mr. Patterson for a fabulous book!

It wasnt all about E R Nurses
If this book is suppose to depict what the medical field namely ER nurses went thru during COVID it didnt come close.. It had nurses from various depts who were also some military and thats a total different subject describe how they floated from dept to the ER. It also has many stories of the nurses hitting the bars after work in it . This book im guessing was suppose to shine the light on what was going on thru the COVID epidemic not be about another book on people in the medical field. I am a LPN and i found some that was actually insulting Some was actually true But an overall another book that doesnt really describe nursing and adding military is a total different relm. Im also a veteran and a widow of a veteran so ive experienced that phase. The nurses that went thru COVID and i was not one of them went thru some horrific times that im sure the mother of nursing would drop her lamp

E.R. Nurses is an eye opening for All that have never been a ER Nurse
This chronicle of multiple ER Nurses is very well described. Their stories & feelings are heartfelt & true. I encourage people to read this about the nurses in the worst/best department in any hospital. These Nurses work in the most stressful environment second only to our military in active duty in a war zone. I loved my 30+ years of Emergency Nursing & applaud any Nurse that has the courage, knowledge & ability to work in such an unpredictable environment. My wish would be that the general public was more educated about them and what they do. An ER is not the Ritz. Patients must be treated on the basis of severity of their illness & not based on how or when they arrived to the ER. I never understood how some people are so tunnel visioned when going to an ER. My respect and appreciation to all of those that choose this career path. You are all under appreciated and very under respected. Do not forget you are the best among us!

Nurses work their hineys off.
I’m still reading this. It reminds me of my last trip to the ER. Not a big deal but I learned that after the fact. Anyway it’s the before that’s important. Shortly after being tucked into bed, I got a roommate. Talk about a frequent flyer. EVERYTHING was I’m on my last legs. Spoke very loudly…so the entire ER could know she was back. DEMANDING the phone for over an hour! I quietly laid in bed and didn’t make a peep until I had to go potty. When I got back, she started cussing this new employee. I told her off but good. She actually apologized to the kid! When my nurse came to me a couple hours later I told her what I had done. She got very teary eyed and told me thank you…we aren’t allowed to call patients out even when they’re in the wrong. We hugged. She was so grateful that I had her back and everyone else’s and that once this patient started cussing the kid someone stood up for all them.

I was looking forward to reading this book and ....
....I was not let down. This book comprises the life experiences of, mainly newly qualified nurses going to embark on a career in A&E, in the military and others. Very well brought together, not sure how much James Patterson had to do with this but it keeps him relevant. I loved this book, even though it is very Americanised. I recommend this book to you all.
