The Eyes of the Cat: The Yellow Edition

Twisted and Dark
The duo works of Alejandro Jodorowski and Jean Giraud (Moebuis) are well known but don't let this one slip by if you haven't experienced it yet. I prefer the actual book in hand when it comes to reading, but the digital copy of this is such a pleasure to read because of the stark yellow against Moebius's beautiful illustrations. The back and forth single page perspective plays particularly well on digital since it is told in grand panels and plays like shots from a film. You only end up seeing one page at a time instead of your eyes looking ahead to what the next page is offering. Because of this, the story brings a tension and surprise to the ending . This is twisted and dark and beautiful. It is very tempting to rush through but if you can slow it down and let yourself fall into the story, the reward is well worth it. If you are in the least bit interested in illustrative storytelling, then this one is a must.

A master's masterpiece
An incredibley powerful story and even more powerful artwork from two geniuses. As Jodorowsky stated in the preface, Moebius art was proof that comic art matches the artistic level of paintings found in museums.

Slight but interesting none-the-less
This story is slight but in its way shocking enough to be effective. Of all the Jodorowsky and Moebius collaborations, this is the least Jodorowsky influenced. Yes, the landscape is vaguely post-apocalyptic and, yes, it is utterly strange. Yet most of the joy of this comic comes from the clean line work of Meobius contrasted with half-tone printing. The introductory notes are quite interesting, particularly if you have not seen the documentary on Jodorowsky's Dune, and the art is vaguely horrifying. While I may not call it a gem, it is worth "reading" for the artwork alone and for a glimpse into the history into Moebius's and Jodorowsky's creative relationship.

Spoiler-Free Review
The Eyes of the Cat has been on and off my "to buy" list ever since the 1978 classic was reprinted a year ago. For $20 or $30 and 56 pages, it's not quite a deal. But Moebius. But Jodorowsky. Their first collaboration. The Eyes of the Cat is a very simple production, with 25 pages of the "eyes of the cat" story, and beside each one, a shadowy figure of a boy. 50 pages + 6 pages of wonderful introductory notes by Jodorowsky, and you have 56 pages. And on Kindle for under $5. I couldn't pass it up!This is short, and you have to know that going in. When Moebius first heard of the story, he assumed that it would only be five pages or so, and 24 pages were needed for a comic book. The two lovingly expanded the basic story to 50 pages, and the result is fantastic, a marvel in the genre of comic books. It's a bit terrifying, and wholly unsuited for children and sensitive adults. Still, I give it my highest recommendations. *****

Wish there was more
The art was good but the story was so short it didnt tell much of anything. I hope there will be another book.

The best duo ever
Jodorowsky and Moebius are the best writing/art team ever and this book doesn't disappoint. There is very little text in the book and it allows the art and the story to really shine through. Really great and I'm so glad I got the hard cover yellow edition. 10/10

A short visual poem, beautiful and mystical like every collaboration between these two. Jodo and Moebius were a perfect fit for one another creativity.

Atmospheric short comic
Such an interesting way to format a comic. The switching back and forth between perspectives helps maintain a sense of unease. It was surprisingly gruesome, as well as hauntingly beautiful.
