A fitting tribute to the greatest club
During the early and mid 80s New York had a tremendous variety of nightlife. The great Mudd Club had run its course, as had Studio 54 and Xenon. The Roxy and Paradise Garage were going strong on the west side, and Danceteria was at its height. Limelight arrived, but its heyday didnt come until the rise of the club kids. The Palladium briefly made a good showing, with its grand 14th Street location and Michael Todd and Kenny Scharf rooms. But above them all reigned AREA.Every night the crowds would line up at 157 Hudson St, near the Holland Tunnel exit ramps, for the chance to be chosen. The widest cross section of the city's artistic, cultural, and social worlds would come to listen to Johnny Dynell, Anita Sarko and the other djs, and hang out with Basquiat, Warhol, John Sex, Matt Dillon, Zette and the rest of the decade's most interesting characters. The club's theme and decor changed every 6 weeks. Living dioramas lined the entry hall. "Gnarly" had skateboarders and a half pipe set up in the main room. "Art" had Survival Research Labs robots battling each other each night. This magnificent volume covers the club's life, from 1983-87. Impressive physically, the book is lavishly filled with photos. Invitations to the theme opening nights were always small works of art, and this book brings the same mindset to its design. The Goodes spent the time, effort, and expense to create this magnificent document. To me, the photos of Dolph Lundgren and Grace Jones at AREA are as iconic of early-80s NYC as those of Bianca Jagger on the horse at 54 were of late-70s NY. Eric later opened the urbane club MK, but things just were't the same. The city and the social scene were starting to change. Nothing may ever come close to AREA 1984/85 again. Buy this book and find out what you missed.

Warhol loved and was part of Area.
Since my Photographic work appears as well as my actual presence in the Tome I am of course prejudiced in its favor Heavily. I feel blessed to be apart of this but the full page Madonna shots are mine. I own the negative and the slide. the purple one was shot with Infra Red Kodak film which is a slide film. These important shots are accredited to another by mistake. The Publisher has no plans to correct this book at this time They were sold at Bergdorf Goodman's and are out of print and none in the warehouse.

Great book but..
The book is great but arrived damaged (assumed through shipping) and the seller was very fast to action when it came to correcting the issue with the book. They were amazing and the content of the book is supremely interesting. But it feels a lot like a scrap book at times.

Like STUDIO 54
AREA, is a very large book, of one of the most major art, fashion and nightlife clubs in NYC of the early 1980's. Like STUDIO 54. A, must have book on the city's most famous nightclub AREA. This book, is full of great photos and how nightlife was in NEW YORK CITY's 1980s

Amazing Memories
The book captures minutia from that club. It was great to see photos of faces I've recognized and of a couple of lost friends who also went.
