Disappointed
After reading "The White Mandarin," I was super excited to read this book. I'm about 60% through and making myself read to the end, just to find out who did it. Maybe it's me, but I can't get myself into the dialogues. Maybe it'll get better, I hope

This is one of my favorite Revolutionary War novels
This is one of my favorite Revolutionary War novels. The author does an excellent job of capturing the time period with both the settings and the dialogue. The story's hero, Matty Grove, a Continental Army officer charged with finding a traitor to the American cause, finds himself tracking a man-made monster instead, a murderous pawn on whom the traitor depends to perform his dirty work. The characters are all well drawn. Grove is is an especially interesting figure, strong and determined, with a dry wit. Grieving over the horrific loss of his family, for which he blames the British, Grove struggles to remain objective in his quest, but his need for vengeance simmers just below the surface. His one weakness is Nancy Claire, the mistress of a powerful merchant whose name is on Grove's short list of suspects.A wonderful read, fast-paced and authentic. I recommend this book to lovers of American Revolutionary fiction.

Great story that is as apropos in today's world as the setting of 1778
Characterization and story line excellent. Get a feeling that you are in colonial America in 1778 while experiencing situations and ideals that are very appropriate to 2020. Dan Sherman writes a great story complete with mystery, murder, intrigue and historical accuracy. I have never been disappointed in one of his tales.
