Why Gender Matters, Second Edition: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know About the Emerging Science of Sex Differences

Mixed feelings...but worth chewing on the bones.
Since this is written from a secular worldview I was a bit hesitant to read this. And yet so much of what Dr. Sax wrote resonates with me and the errors we, my generation are making in raising our children. Some favorite quotes:"Gender is a reality. Gender matters. You can ignore that reality if you like, but ignoring it doesn't make it go away. When girls and boys are given no guidance, the result often is girls who present themselves as sexual objects and boys who engage in reckless physical risk taking.""If you fail to teach little boys to respect little girls, some years later you are likely to have teenage boys who do not respect teenage girls."Several chapters were hard for me to read but I'm glad I was able to chew on it, spit out the bones and learn from the marrow.

Great read!
Why Gender Matters was a very interesting read. I would highly recommend this book to other teachers and parents. In fact, it would have been beneficial for me to read this book when I was finishing up my undergrad about to go into my career. In the classroom, we are so quick to become frustrated and angry. With the help of this book, I am able to understand my students better, and know the difference between boys and girls. I believe as an educator, that it opened my eyes to so many things. It is detrimental for us to be able to meet the needs of our students exactly where they are. This book gave many real-life experiences and stories that were eye opening. I always wondered how I could be accepting of children that were transgender or identified themselves in the LGBT community even when it went against my personal beliefs. Not only can we help them grow and succeed, but we can also help them feel understood, cared for, and loved.

One of a kind
There is nothing like this book: evidence in abundance - but you're not overwhelmed by citations, for he puts the references in as needed and in a way that's easy on the eyes. His conclusions are based on or with the support of the studies which he adduces. His writing style is sober but very entertaining.

Very helpful!
This book was fascinating, and I would recommend it to teachers and parents. This is an updated version of its first release in 2005. Leonard Sax does a great job of explaining the reality of gender differences between boys and girls, and how to let that guide our teaching and parenting of them. He is the only voice I have heard that points out the scholarly evidence of differences while at the same time encouraging us not to restrict boys and girls to stereotypical gender roles. His tone throughout the book is respectful, but he does point out that the current trend in our culture to deny gender difference, is based more on ideology than on reality and facts. There is also a very informative and concerning chapter on social media/video games, and how they are affecting girls & boys. I will be keeping this book close at hand to refer back to often!

Very well-sourced and interesting look at gender differences
This book offered so many interesting and thought-provoking facts about the differences in boys and girls that it should be read by everyone. You don't have to agree with every point in order to appreciate the argument that modern culture treats gender inappropriately and inadequately. The biological differences between males and females discussed in the book alone make it worth reading.

If you read, this is a bucket list must.
Even if you think this isn't you're cup of tea you're gonna find it fastenateing. The difference between the sexes is way more than just the obvious. It goes all the way to the cellular level.Just the difference between the male and female eye is mindblowing! We see the world totally different!Makes me think I'd like to be a woman for a day just to experience it.Make that an hour, I'd be terrified if I had to pee!!!

Understanding Gender Differentiation instead of Gender Equality in Instructional Practice
The book itself is being used as part of a workshop that I am attending. This is an extensive update of the first edition. There are many important points for teachers to understand and implement. Nearly all ideas are time neutral in terms of classroom implementation. Those that are not, are due to revisions and edits necessary in current materials that a teacher may have already developed. Extensive footnotes leads the reader to primary sources in journals.

Worth the read
Not written very well, a lot of repetition. BUT if you can get past that this book is so refreshing. I guess i already agreed with a lot of this and i’m sure this author caught a lot of flack for his conclusions by groups that disagree but ultimately most of this is based on science, not opinion. I’m so glad someone is brave enough to say what many of us were already thinking.

Best book purchase this year
As a homeschooling mama with a boy and girl the same age this book is helping sooooo much. I thought I understood some of the differences before but this... this is a whole 'nother level

Eye-opening
The book says its primary audience is parents, teachers, and people who work with kids. However, being none of those, I believe anyone can and should read this. It contains studies and data on why we can't treat boys and girls always the same.I know it's hard for a lot of people to read "Why Gender Matters" and not be offended nowadays, but this a must to read. I learned a lot that I would've never thought. There were some comments/reviews from people that felt offended by the book: ignore those. My guess would be that they're mad because this book proves with actual data and studies that their little fantasy world where "everybody is the same" and everything is a "social construct" is completely, utterly wrong.

Molto molto interessante!
Comunque estremamente interessante! Complimenti all'autore.

Good but incomplete
While I wanted this to be a good book, the author does not explain why his conclusions are representative of neurologically hardwired social norms rather than psychological patterns affected by social trends and perspectives.

REAL social justice
In an age of "political correctness" and ignorance of basic human biology, this book is a breath of fresh air for parents and teachers! Recognizing the needs of boys and girls so we can give them equal opportunity to achieve greatness in their lives :)
