The Little Book of Talent: 52 Tips for Improving Your Skills
J**E
A perfect follow up to the Talent Code!
Daniel has provided a wonderful system where we can chunk down his previous book tips into 52 steps. His strategies/research has been extremely helpful in helping me perfect my skill set. Some of my favorites:Tip #22 - Pay attention immediately after you make a mistake. Daniel mentions it is instinctual to want to ignore the mistake. By facing the mistake then asking yourself how can you improve and learn from that mistake will move towards a higher level of learning.Tip #47 - To learn it more deeply, teach it. By following this approach, I have become an expert in my field. Through many levels of embedding this information into long term memory - studying, preparing for a presentation, then presenting the information further helps in making the information stick.Tip #49 - When you get stuck, make a shift. Here, Daniel discusses the "plateau" approach in which the progress of perfecting a skill suddenly stops. Through his recommendations and extensive research, multiple solution were provided to overcome this plateau which has led to a significant improvement in my talent within a short period of time.In another tip, he mentioned reading a book, then closing it to learn more (which is basically what I am doing in this review). For studying purposes, rather than memorizing the ten pages from a book, read it once, then write a summary of it. You are forced to focus on the key points of the book - overall "more reaching, more repetition".Thank you Daniel! Some of these strategies are extremely helpful in incorporating them into my classroom.

Really Useful
There are hundreds, no thousands, of new self-help books out there, but most are either notional (based on one person's experience or thoughts that may or may not translate to anyone else), or a complex rendering of a research project (lots of data with a conclusion). This is something different. Each "Tip" is short and sweet, no more than a paragraph or two, with concrete images that help you understand it. But each tip is the result of intense study on a specific (narrow) topic. The tips are organized in a way that makes it easy to see the progression in building a skill. It is basically written in a style that builds on the performance skills being taught here. Each of these tips really resonate. Looking at my own life, I recognize techniques used by the best of my teachers over the years.Well researched, well organized, and well written. Highly recommended.

Good advice, but for technical skills only
Early in this short book, Coyle asks you to appreciate the distinction between hard and soft skills. Hard skills are those you either perform correctly or incorrectly (playing a musical score, shooting a free throw). Soft skills are those that require intuition or discretion (painting a picture for example). This is an important distinction, as almost every anecdote or example relates to hard skills (playing sheet music, sports etc.). For most of the 52 tips, you'll be hard-pressed to imagine ways to apply them to soft skills or to any endeavor requiring creativity. I would give this book 5 stars if it delivered in this regard, or perhaps had a more accurate title ('52 tips for Improving your *hard* skills). That criticism aside, this book is written very clearly and contains useful tips.

Get it
I actually got this book as a hard copy thru school but wanted a digital copy to reference often whenever I needed it. It's that good. I have read a ton of books in this vein but this is actually very useful and not shallow. It makes recommendations that actually work. The author did thorough research, speaking with all types of leaders, performers and coaches in every type of field one could imagine. And the author is clearly passionate about his topic. My girlfriend actually enjoyed me telling her about some of the anecdotes in the book.I'm excited to start putting some of the tips into practice in the real world, but I'm confident that I will see results.I'm confident I can take these tips and ideas and make myself better in every aspect of my life from my tennis game to my relationship to working with others in my career and being a true, inspirational leader. Recommend!

Excellent
Can’t say enough about this book. If you could hire the top coaches and trainers, and just listen to them explain their methods and ideas- that’s what this book is. Very inspiring and and easy read.

Little book, standard price
This book can be read in one hour. Despite its small size, it carries the usual Kindlle book price of $9.99, "set by the publisher."The book describes the characteristics shared by "talent hotbeds" where great athletes, musicians, and other performance masters are developed around the world. The author provides an intentionally concise set of tips for improving your performance at any endeavor, drawing techniques used in the talent hotbeds. The tips can be used to coach yourself, your children, or anyone else. The three stars I gave this book is mainly for the price. It makes some interesting points about how skills can be developed in anyone, and in that sense it has an inspiring message. The book could make you a better coach. However, the "little book" format does leave you feeling that the examples cited by the author are somewhat anecdotal.Worth reading, though.
