Are you suppose to keep buying lids after you open it? I don’t get it.

It really is not obvious, when you look at it, but you must press down on the top of the lid, to make the center portion pop down, to lock onto the rim. I thought that they were defective, too, that they were completely useless, until I realized how they are supposed to work. Hope this helps other people, who buy these, and just don't immediately see it, either!

can these be used in a top loading water dispenser? (3 and 5 gallon bottles also have the same 48mm mouth)

Can these lids be reused? I want to use these as refillable water jugs for the refrigerator, want to be able to get caps on and off easily.

Yes! I use these jugs for my cows fresh milk and they are reusable lids, that's why I love these jugs

Has the lid design been improved on this product?

No. I returned the item due to lid leakage.
