Very good novel - but imagine my surprise when I discovered this is the exact same book as The Silk Weaver, also by Liz Trenow.. I purchased both books on Amazon, first buying The Silk Weaver. Thought it was good so ordered The Hidden Thread. Same book, different cover and title. I will be returning The Hidden Thread. Gotta say, this is very misleading!

In the image of Jane Austin
If you like Jane Austin, you will probably like this novel. Placed in 1760, the author uses actual events intertwined with fictional characters. It is a love story with the typical girl meets boy, girl loses boy etc. Although nicely written, the author has an annoying habit of providing long lists of items for descriptions. Overall, a satisfying read.

I ordered this book by accident, thinking it was another book. No regrets. I really enjoyed it. I did find the ending to be a little abrupt, but was glad the author included an epilogue to tell the reader what happens to the characters in the future.

Liz Trenow's gem
The Hidden Thread is a beautiful novel and, without question, one of my top 5 reads of the year . Liz Trenow's knowledge of history (the reason French Protestants left Catholic France), her understanding of class divisions in England, and her expertise of silk making make this book one not to be missed. It is perfect for bookclubs, for anyone wanting to escape the headlines, and for everyone who enjoys well-written prose.

Wonderful read
I read a lot of historical fiction and this book was a gem. It introduced you to interesting people, studied their backgrounds and ideas of class. It also informs you of the times in London when the silk industry is thriving and some conditions are grim. Of course there is a love story woven in to the fabric of the adventure. I certainly enjoyed it.

Couldn't put it down.
If you are looking for a book that will keep your interest all the way through, this is it. It was wonderful and unexpected. I've read it a couple times and it was just as good the second time. I would recommend this to everyone.

A good read. Life in the 1700's was not easy by any means especially for women--either rich or poor or in between.Learned about the silk trade as well. I liked the story line also.

A Different setting
I love how the reader is given a look at the silk weavers and its art. Prejudice is overcome. Though it is another Romeo and Juliet story, it had wonderful substance and twists and turns.

This book was obviously published twice by two different publisher and giving it two different titles. I was very surprised when I started reading it to discover it was the same book as The Silk Weaver...published in the U.K. I also realised that I had paid Β£12.+ for this book! Quite a shock. How do these things happen? I can understand a different cover/art work but Title????Thank you for helping clarify this to me...V. G.

Buyer beware.
Confusing in that there are still no information in the description for this book that it is an American version of the original book under a different name. Please be aware of this.

Historic read about the silk industry and the influx of master weavers and artisans into East End life
Very detailed account of the silk industry woven into the story of Anna and Henri a journeyman from France building his fortune in the silk weaving industry around Spittalfields
