For over 5 generations the artist of Haiti have have been perfecting the craft of up cycling old steel oil drums. First the the old paint and residue is removed by burning the drum on a pile of dried banana leaves, then the ends of the drum are removed, the drum sliced down the side and rolled out flat, after which everything is sanded clean. The artist draws the design onto the drum with chalk and then cuts it out using just a hammer and chisel. Then colored paint are applied layer by layer unit the design is completed. the final application is clear varnish to seal the design and protect it from the elements.
