This book inspires my creativity
This is an absolutely beautiful book on beginning to cross stitch, and it is much more than just how-tos on old-lady cross stitching; the book contains an artful presentation of cross stitch as both craft and art form and describes the world of cross stitch that extends beyond granny squares and samplers. This book is for someone who wants to learn to cross stitch while also developing their consciousness of the craft, which has been historically undermined because of its association with femininity, into a form of art that can be played with in unconventional ways. You won’t find anything in here explaining frogging your work (as one reviewer lamented) probably because Chalmers would argue against doing so and to instead roll with it and create something new out of the perceived mistakes.

Nice but not enough information
This is a nice publication but if you REALLY want to know how to get started with cross stitching this just won’t do. You need to look at some of the many videos on the internet for more practical guidance. And they’re free!

Love it!
I can't imagine giving this book a negative review. It's absolutely wonderful! I can't wait to make Mona Lisa and the pineapple. Red work inside of letters, a retro pattern, geek stuff, stitching on metal! Who knew there was glow in the dark thread? The framing info is so helpful. I always struggle with that part. Don't hesitate to buy It!

Fun read!
I loved reading this book! Easy read with very understandable explanations of how to do a variety of things-stitching, finishing a project, and even framing. Beautiful color pictures and examples of projects from others. Would love to see more books by this author!

This is not a book of charts, BUT it is a GREAT book for beginners!
Great book with lots of great tips for beginners. Not as many charts as I was hoping it would have, but the tips and pointers and explanations of things more than make up for it. The charts that are included are great, high-quality, and very interesting. If you're looking for a book to get a beginner, GET THIS ONE!

What a lovely book this is.
Bought it last week, read it while relaxing but too tired to stitch, and that alone was worth the price of admission. The writing is witty and informative and the designs are beautiful, witty and look doable with the instructions provided. I'm delighted to have bought this gift for myself.

Must have for new cross stitchers!
I love this book! It’s a perfect introduction to how to cross stitch and to the possibilities of what one can make with cross stitch. Easy to understand and tons of gorgeous photos/patterns. I highly recommend this book! The designs are very inspiring.

Lovely intro to Cross-stitch
I liked the section on pattern design, as I am more interested in this, and in manipulating pre-existing patterns.

Loved the book...
Visually stunning. Honours the craft. Plus the history of embroidery was educational.

Do not expect helpful instructions on various stitches or much how to.
This is more of a coffee table book with colourful pictures and lots of chit chat than an instructional one. Did not live up to expectations.

Not what I expected
I expected a fuller tutorial such as frogging, parking, railroading and other techniques. Also for a beginner more about different fabric counts and which is best for what type of designs and whether double strand or single. Which size needles to use etc etc. Lots of questions that as a beginner I was hoping to find answers to, even if it did not go into great depth. The "see inside" really showed nothing to indicate that the book would be more about different designs than a tutorial.
