A 28 carat clear Quartz cabochon (22mm x 16mm) featuring a 6 ray star of golden Rutile needles spraying from a metallic hematite crystal creates this absolutely mesmerizing masterpiece. This high quality stone has been expertly cut and framed with 14K yellow gold. Rutilation occurs naturally during the heat and pressure process involved with quartz formation. A simple understanding is that its a "captured" inclusion of another crystal by the quartz. The inclusion in this case is titanium dioxide. It has a gold color and grows from a base of hematite which is gun metal in color. Since quartzes have six sides, so can the silicon dioxide. Sprays of 3, 4, 5, and 6 are called stars. However stars must include the matrix from which they grew. Maximum rays is six because of quartz's maximum number of sides and are very infrequent finds. Mining destroys some making availability even less. But we have a magnificent specimen here, captured and framed beautifully by the crystal clear Quartz, for you to gaze upon.
