Come an' Get It

It's strange how the critics and the band members are divided on this one. On one side you have the critics who have commonly stated how this was an uninspired album with too many mid-paced songs and little to no dynamics. On the other you have the people who did it, namely David Coverdale who goes so far as to state this to be the quintessential Whitesnake album of that period. Former member Doug Aldrich also went on record stating that if he had his way, "Child of Babylon" would have been back in the setlist. Me, well I think this is a really good album. Without question it had the best lineup the band ever saw and while it isn't as strong as the preceding "Ready An Willing", the songs are still solid and the performances are strong. "Don't Break My Heart Again" is a fine example of how good this band was during this period. Jon Lord's keyboard work really shines on this one and "Lonely Days, Lonely Nights" shows that Coverdale can really bring the house down. On this album you also get some variety with "Girl", a bass-heavy track co-written by the real unsung hero of Whitesnake Neil Murray who is a very inventive bassist to say the least. Truth be told, if you aren't a Whitesnake fan then you won't dig this, but chances are if you're reading this then you are, so what are you waiting for? Come an' get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes sir,good old fashioned blues-based in your face rock-n-roll!! Unlike Whitesnakes later "commercial" efforts,this one is very,very tight.Excellent musicianship and vocals.The songs are simple and catchy,but played with great enthusiasm and effort.It is very clear that the band members were gelling,and loved putting this fine album together."Don't Break My Heart Again" is a thumping,hard driver that will make you stomp your feet!! And "Lonely Days Lonely Nights" is an awesome blues guitar effort with some damn fine lead work. "Come 'An Get It","Girl","Would I Lie To You",and "Hit And Run" should be textbook examples as to how simple, straight-forward, rock and roll should be played!!! Whitesnake (other than Lovehunter) doesn't get any better than this.Highly recommended!!!!!

Another of the great albums that time forgot. When Whitesnake was first introduced to the United States, they were largely overlooked by the mainstream music scene. This should have been the record to change that. Alas, it required a complete revamp and a loss of the originality that this album provides to break through to the spandex-and-hair crowd. THIS is what the 'Snake was about, crunchy blues and driving rock and roll. The title track and "Wine, Women, and Song" should have been their initial big hits in the States, bouncing the listener along like a hayride through the countryside, grinning ear-to-ear. The tongue-in-cheek innuendo reminds one of Aerosmith, but the music is handled with much more diversity and grace. Fans of either should enjoy this. If you only know the hits that Whitesnake put out, this might just show you the light of what they should have always been.

I've gone back and ordered these old Whitesnake Cds. Really cool with Bonus Tracks !! I gotta tell you if you like real Rock n' Roll. These Cds are Awesome !! David's vocals are superb. Also future Black Sabbath member Neil Murray on bass. And the late GREAT Jon Lord (Deep Purple) on keyboards and Ian Paice (Deep Purple) on drums. The guitar players are very solid as well. Until I got these older Whitesnake discs the oldest one I had was "Slide It In". I was not disappointed by these older discs. A real pleasure listening to some Real Rock N' Roll.

At first listen, I wasn't terribly impressed. After about the 3rd or 4th time through, I grew to love it. It's basic, solid rock and roll. Wine, Women and Song is my favorite on the album, but all songs are good. I don't have to skip any of them. The bonus tracks are average, not great.

Love Coverdale. Love the CDs - ALL the CDs. I love the fact the he will re-record a song a couple times because it goes through a Genesis of sorts and you get to hear what it sounded like back then and it shows up a few years later sounding even better. Good stuff.

Hands down the best CD by this band. This was just before they started their more commercial era and I tell you what this one finds it's way into my CD player just as much as the day I bought it. If you haven't discovered the other side of Whitesnake this is a good place to start. One word PHENOMENAL!

I did “Come & Get It” and was glad I did. “Don’t Break My Heart Again” is my favourite Whitesnake song, so this CD was an easy decision.

Erst seit April des Jahres 1980 war das letze Album der Band auf dem Markt, da befanden sich die fünf Musiker im Juli desselben Jahres gleich wieder im Studio. Auch im September ˋ80 stand eine Session an. Im Januar ˋ81 schließlich war das neue Werk fertig. Come An‘ Get It erschien am dann endlich am 11. April 1981.Unverändert blieb das Personal und auch der Stil. Die Band spielte auch wieder guten alten britischen Bluesrock mit einer gehörigen Portion gediegener Härte. Alles gut und soweit auch logisch. Auch der Erfolg der Band konnte gesteigert werden. Das Album erzielte in vielen Charts, gerade in Europa, vorderste Plätze. Auch die beiden Singles ernteten Lorbeeren.“Don't Break My Heart Again“ war hier die erfolgreichste der beiden Singles. Was für ein Song. Kein Wunder dass er so beliebt wurde. David Coverdale dominiert hier und ohne die Orgel vom Herrn Lord ist der Song nicht denkbar. Hier herrscht Herzschmerz pur und auch die Gitarren dominieren nicht sondern fügen sich der Struktur des Stückes.Doch beginnt das Album gleich mit dem Titelstück. “Come An‘ Get It“ hat genügend Drive um in die Songreihenfolge einzutauchen. Hier fallen natürlich die sehr bestimmenden Gitarren der Herren Marsden und Moody auf. Gleich beim nächsten Titel geht das Duo in die Vollen. “Hot Stuff“ ist eine schnelle Nummer mit einem druckvollen Ian Paice. Hier gibt es fast schon Purple-Qualitäten. Richtig cool bis dann “Don't Break My Heart Again“ beginnt.Höhepunkte gibt es reichlich und kein Whitesnake-Fan wird die Güte des Albums ernsthaft infrage stellen. Gerade “Wine, Women an' Song“ ist einer dieser Momente. So habe ich die Band für immer abgespeichert. Vom Blues besessen und hart damit gerockt. Die Solos der Gitarristen sind flüssig und unterstützen sich.Die zweite Seite der LP startet gleich mit dem wieder mal stark gesungenen “Child of Babylon“. Langsam in der Gangart ist es doch keine Ballade, sondern fast schon Prog-Rock. Die Auflösung hinten heraus ist einfach nur gut gelungen.Mit “Would I Lie to You“ folgt nun die zweite (schlechter anschneidende Single-Auskoppelung). Man kann sich gut vorstellen warum. Eigentlich ist das Stück nichts besonderes; halt ein Midtempo-Rocker mit Blueseinschlag. Die Beine Wippen aber trotzdem mit dem Takt.Als letzter wirklicher Höhepunkt geht bei mir natürlich “Hit an' Run“ in die Wertung. Ein wirklich guter Song mit einem richtig coolen Drive. Mir gefällt er besonders da ich die härtere Spielart der Band einfach schön fand. Die Struktur ist gut gelungen und der Titel bietet viel Abwechslung, gerade im Mittelteil bevor die Gitarren einsetzen. Leider viel zu kurz.Die letzte Sentimentalität am Ende des Albums ist schön anzuhören. Gerade die klassische Gitarre ist bezaubernd und führt über in den Gesang. Mein Fall sind diese Schmacht-Songs nicht. Man muss jedoch David eingestehen, dass seine Stimme dazu geeignet ist wie keine andere. Als Abschluss jedoch passt “Till the Day I Die“ hingegen. Er ist wieder ein deutliches Erkennungszeichen der Band. Breit mit Orgel zum Abschied.Ein wirklich gelungenes Stück Schlangenarbeit kann man der Band am Ende attestieren. Das Album gefällt weil sich die Musiker gegenseitig unterstützen und man den Blues nicht aus dem Auge verliert. Ein kleines Stück Romantik an die gute alte Schlangen-Zeit.Auch dieses Album wurde in den verschiedensten Varianten auf den Markt geworfen. Es gibt Vinyle und CD-Ausgaben davon; Normale und auch Sonderpressungen. Hier ist vor allem die 2006 erschienene Remastered Edition bemerkenswert. Auf dieser Scheibe finden sich alternative Schnitte der Albumtitel. Alle hörenswert jedoch muss man diese direkt miteinander vergleichen. Nimmt man sich die Zeit so merkt man deutliche Unterschiede. Im Grunde reichen jedoch auch die Originale vollkommen.Als Fazit nun kann man für das Album eine dicke Kaufbewertung abgeben. Mir gefällt es sehr gut. Die Band ist auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens und das ist deutlich zu hören. Auch wenn ich mir eingestehen muss, dass der Nachfolger dieser Scheibe (Saints & Sinners) hier noch einen Zacken schärfer ist. Doch das ist wieder eine andere Geschichte. Sie wird später erzählt

Superbe album avec des bonus agréables.Sans doute le meilleurs album de WhiteSnake à mon oreille. David Coverdale est au sommet de sa forme et le groupe est dans sa meilleure configuration avec Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Neil Murray, Bernie Marsden et Micky Moody. Inutile d'encore faire, je crois, la publicité de ce chef d'oeuvre.Excellente qualité de remasterisation.Les bonus s'écoutent en continu dans la suite logique de l'album; des "repeat", bien sur, car peu de différence entre les versions alternatives et les versions de l'album original. Mais comme tout est très bon... :-)Je l'écoute en boucle. Il n'y a rien à jeter. Quel plaisir pour les oreilles et le coeur!
