Matthew Good: In A Coma: 1995-2005 (EMI)
It's sad to know that a man as opinionated and educated as this one would be creating a ten-year retrospective for his work, especially since i feel like I am the only man who has noticed that Matthew Good's only album in America was Beautiful Midnight. In fact, I keep on worrying every time I get the chance what happened to Matthew Good with the American releases. Every other album was released in Canada, and it turns out America doesn't get to participate and listen in on his interviews and questions about choosing between a mansion and Social Distortion. Now, In A Coma was released with all of his latest and greatest tunes and videos (sold separately), even the limited edition where they release his further imports like Loser Anthems. To tell you the truth, I wondered what made him do that, because if I understand the likes of the socially active and dignified, some of them feel they don't need to release a greatest hits album. The albums were greatest Hits album. But the Greatest Hits album contains all his geatest hits from The Future Is X-Rated (the song in which when everyone thinks of x-rated, they think of sex and nothing more), Alert Status Red ("In the wilderness, where the place you find freedom is in the dictionary under 'F'"), In A World Called Catastrophe (a well-expressed tune with 9-volume guitars sounding from the perspective of the cynical looking at the apocalypse from all over), to "Weapon" ("Here by my side, an angel/here by my side, the Devil") and also where his two newest singles are placed ("Oh Be Joyful", "Big City Life"). It also seems as if he took his best songs and the ones we hadn't heard much of and played acostic versions The disc is better known as ROOMS. To tell you the truth, "Hello Time Bomb" had energy and brains, so I can't really picture it being played with an acoustic guitar. Now that I listen to it in acoustic, it sounds kind of...eh. Melancholy and out of energy to spare. I also can't picture "Strange Days" being played any other way, BUT acoustic as it was originally. "Truffle Pigs" sounds as if it wasmade for acoustic because it fit the mood. Notice that whenever the music ia acoustic, that means not that he will not use samples for the music. Apparentlu, none of this was really live. So it seems the music is packed with the best and the unforgetable. My one question is of why "Giant" wasn't put there. It would have been a wonderful add to the album, no matter if the album seems like a shot at the major label while they were on Atlantic Records. That would have been a wonderful statement to make on a greatest hits, but then again the statement would have shown his contradiction because he released a retrospective. Oh well. The listen was fun while it lasted, I believe. And so was the meet of a human called Matthew Good and his band. Odds are after ten years, he may come back for more music. Rightnow, settle for as much wisdom as you can get out of the CD. And you can say, "Godspeed, my brother. Thanks for your attempt to change music and the world."Rating: 7.5/10

this is an excellent collection of Matthew good/MGB tracks. Many of the best songs from each album are included (minus some important ones in my opinon) but the real treat is that "Loser Anthems" and "Lo-fi B-sides" are also included. Those of us who searched the earth for those tracks can now have some peace of mind. I wish some of his really early stuff could of made it on the list. Songs like "Dancing Invisable" "The Ocean" and "The Bombmaker" are awsome tracks from his Pre Matthew Good Band days that would of fit perfectly. "Rooms" is amazing. It really shows how Matt has the talent to write a beautiful song then change it up and still have a beautiful song. The acoustic version of "Strange days" steals the show for me. I really enjoy the music video DVD. I think that MGB had some of the coolest most imaginitive videos to date. Seeing "Stange days" on T.V got me hooked on them. Plus it's cool to hear Matt's comentary. All in all, if you're a Matthew Good fan you can't lose. I think he put this all together as a gift to us, the fans. The only thing that's sad is that such a talent is greatly unknown and that more people don't know his work.

Only For Fans
In contrast to the other reviewer, I feel this to be quite a decent release from Mr. Good. Fans will be delighted by the wonderful second disc, which contains an all-at-once acoustic recording of 9 songs that Matt has reworked.Matthew Good is an artist that is both equally adored and despised- for me, he was an aquired taste, and has grown to be one of my favourite musicians. One look at the track listings of hits, and you can see that Matt has had an extensive Canadian music career, and has in his later years turned to more political and social perspectives both voiced on his blog, and in his musical content. This will be a well enjoyed package for fans of both the Matthew Good Band and Matthew's solo work.

Great Album - why pay more?
A great collection of stuff for old and new fans alike. Obviously the music is great but the DVDs are packed with interesting commentaries and a nice short about Rooms. The only thing you have to ask yourself is "Do I really want to pay $50 for an Amazon import when I can order it directly from the Matt Good store at Maple Music for half the price?"

There are three types of people who should buy this: those that have been in a coma for the last ten years, those that have been awake but who've never listened to Matt Good, and those constant listeners who love his music. That's just about everyone isn't it? Great compilation for folks like me from south of the border who don't have easy access to Matt's music. Video collection is great along with Loser Anthems and B-sides.

Wow!
I bought this album on the strength of Faultlines and was not disappointed. Simultaneously haunting and with just a touch of melancholy, all of the songs are beautifully crafted and Karine's voice carries them off perfectly. It's the best combination of contemporary folk and elements of traditional Scottish music. I listen to these on my iPod in the middle of a hot cramped tube carriage and suddenly I'm transported to a glen in the Highlands - absolutely superb!
