If it is by Jim Ferguson just buy it.
Another good Ferguson book. Short and to the point. It has standard notation, tab and fingerboard grids.

Tight, Focused Subject Matter
I'll admit it: I'm a market they can't glut. I buy everything published on jazz guitar that's any good at all, and I own all of Jim Ferguson's books. This one explores the melodic possibilities of the II-V progression that inhere within the limits of single positions. Ferguson got me off the ground and going with his "All Blues Soloing for Jazz Guitar" and I've been a fan ever since. "Shapes, Patterns, & Lines" is focused, succinct, and utterly usable. It will move your playing forward, and that's all you can ask of such a publication. But then, I'm a Jim Ferguson fan.

patterns, patterns, patterns
This is a very helpfull book for people just starting out on jazz guitar and looking for a firm basis for soloing and for students looking to expand their vocabulary. Advanced players probably won't be interested.

A Fast Start to Improvising
No scales just yet!Jim does a good job with introducing improvising without learning scales, scales and more scales.. Instead, how about learn melodic shapes, which targets chordal notes... these shapes are base on II-V, which happens to be the inside key to really unlocking jazz. Anywho, Jim uses shapes to create jazz lines over changes... He uses chord diagrams to aid with visualizing the shapes like you do with chords... Also he uses TAB and music notation... However, with the diagram boxes, you will be able to easily move them around like you do chords and play them anywhere on the neck...Get this book if you want to learn improvising first. It is set up so can learn shapes by day and play them by night... fast start indeedI gave it 4 stars because he should have used jazz standards from Fake books to really show the connection. Though it is not needed, it would have been a big A+ in my book...
