Best of the Three
Last I recall I’m around 40 hours into this game. Story wise I feel I’m nearing the half point, but I’ve also been putting in the time doing side activities. For anyone who has played the prior games, this’ll be very familiar, but at the same time also new. Each game is in of itself it’s own thing, but XC3 does a great job mixing the old and the new.Let’s talk battle system. XC3’s is similar much yet simpler than XC2’s and is explained much better. While this game can get overboard on the tutorial side, such as showing how equip gear, it helps immensely with learning the battle system. The devs learned from XC2’s mistakes and fixed them in this game. Now between XC1, 2, & 3, this has been my favorite system. I love that you have the entire main party of characters on the field at once. You can switch during fights. Each character functions a bit differently depending on faction and then class. Stemming from class, this is also the main caveat of this battle system. For the class system you have three: fighter, healer, and defender. I’d say the names explain themselves. While some characters are certain classes by default, the game let’s you equip whatever class on any character so long as it’s unlocked for them. So you really get a lot of options with how to set your party up. Plus you also get an option at some point for a “hero” letting you add a 7th party member. While the only downside is you can’t control that hero, it gives you sort of a wildcard option on how to build your party. Then there’s the ouroborous system or however it’s spelt where you can unleash a monster of sorts into the battle, but don’t want to give too much away on that as it’s key to the story. So yeah that’s the battle system in a nutshell. I love it. It’s a fun system that I feel offers the player a lot of options with the class system. Now for story, I haven’t beaten it, but I’m digging it. The game is set in a world where there are two warring factions and certain characters from both sides find themselves coming together to go on an adventure to end that cycle. It’s very much an anti-war game and maybe one of the best I’ve played regarding that subject matter.Stemming from the story, there’s the new party of characters. Noah, Mio, Eunie, Taion, Lanz, & Sena plus two nopon who are guests of the party. The party system is a major aspect of these games and I find XC3’s to be my favorite bunch so far. The characters seem more realistic and down to earth. While I liked XC2’s party, the characters could get a bit over the top. This game doesn’t have that, they even toned down the nopon in this regard as well. Riku and Manana have been my favorite Nopon main characters of the three games. So yeah I love this party.Lastly I want to talk about the world. This is a big game with a lot to explore and it all feels very seamless too. Plus there’s plenty of diverse locales. Now what I love most about this game’s world and what makes going through this game intriguing is there is a lot of stuff from prior games. While each game is it’s own thing, anyone who has played both the last two games would know they connect in some way and while I don’t know how XC3 fits in, there’s a lot of things I’ve recognized from previous games. While I don’t think you need to play XC1 and 2 to play XC3, I think it may actually be worth it. Plus the prior two games are great in their own right.XC3 is an epic JRPG and one of the best games of this year. Yes this year. While it may not get the same hype as games like Forbidden West, Elden Ring, and the upcoming God of War, this one holds its own and will likely be the best game released on the Switch this year. So if you have a Switch and are into JRPGs, highly recommend. Amazing game.
