18 More Months of Daily Stips
After 2 volumes that had some inner-twined Sundays with the dailies the Phantom goes back to separate Daily stories for the rest of it's still ongoing run. We get six separate stories starting in late 1951, running all through 1952 and ending a couple months into 1953.The stories are still written by creator Lee Falk with artist Wilson McCoy. McCoy's in comparison to some of greats working in comic strips at the time is a bit clunky and cartoony. But that doesn't make these stories any less fun to read. The format for those unfamiliar with the Hermes reprints is two Daily strips per page on high glossy paper in the Landscape (Wider the Tall) Format. The dust jacket is identical to the inner cover. This is the first volume I recall that the Phantom's adventurous girlfriend Diane Palmer does not make a single appearance in. I found this strange. But making their first and second appearances here are the Jungle Patrol. The Jungle Patrol is a jungle peace keeping organization secretly headed by the Phantom which becomes a major part of The a Phantom Mythos from here on out.The Introduction by publisher Daniel Herman is a mere one page and doesn't offer much information.1)THE GOVENORS FAMILY is a story about kidnappers abducting the Govenors wife and young son. Both are privledged and spoiled until the spend time with Phantom during the rescue.2) THE PROFESSOR is about a Beautiful female professor who wants to write a book on the Phantom. She hires the Phantom in his trenchcoar disguise as a guide to learn about the legend of the Phantom. The need to hide everything from the woman seems to contradict some of the other stories. This story does introduce the Jungle Patrol in a small role.3) THE JUNGLE PATROL in which Falk really expands upon the whole concept. This story tells about a young officer out to discover the secret of the Jungle Patrol's unknown leader.4) BOBO THE TOY DOG is a short tale about diamond smugglers who use a boy's toy.5) THE GREAT AJAX is about a strong man who is very conceited. Like the Governors Family story Ajax learns something after spending time with the Phantom.6) THE TOAD MAN is about sea pirates in rubber costumes who looting ships. This is the longest story in this collection and the most straight forward Good Guy Versus Bad Guys story. Most of Falk's other stories have some humour in them.In all another fun read and Highly Recommended..

Phantom is the best and the early fifties saw the best phantom
Phantom is the best and the early fifties saw the best phantom. The world was a different place then, and there was no terrorism and North Korea and Fakisthan were still infants. The era produced memorable adventures of Phantom and he ceaselessly battled the evil. I wish the US Government takes help of this masked hero to liquidate the Jihadis in Fakisthan and North Korea.
