Chingn is Spanish for Bad Ass. Chingn is also the name of the musical collective started by maverick film director Robert Rodriguez. From Santana to El Santo, from The Good, The Bad, The Ugly to Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Rodriguez has sought to fuse the iconic imagery of Mexican culture and music with the visceral tone and vision of the Spaghetti Western. Throw in a big dose of electric mariachis and rock n' roll and you've got Chingn's Mexican Spaghetti Western. Chingn is comprised of some of Rodriguez's closest Austin musical compadres. Rafael Gayol (Charlie Sexton Sextet, Bob Schneider) on drums, blazing guitars from Rick and Mark Del Castillo and the Gitano vocal stylings of Alex Ruiz from the Austin buzz-band Del Castillo. He utilizes the dramatic gritas of Texas Chanteuse Patricia Vonne on "Severina, " enlists cult rock icon Tito Larriva on "Alacran Y Pistolero," and presents the lush vocals of actress Salma Hayek on "Siente Mi Amor." Robert Rodriguez provides compositions, guitarista machine gun fire (much like his character "El Mariachi"), vocal stylings and everything else. "Malaguea Salerosa" and "Cucka Rocka" brandish a blistering guitar attack colored with Gypsy-tinged vocals. These songs alongside other chingnes "Fideo del Oeste" ("Mexican Spaghetti Western"), "El Rey de Los Chingones" (King of the Bad Asses") melds a musical concoction that is both cinematic and primal in its attack, while the infectious "Se Me Paro" kicks the album off to a ferocious start.

Blazing and amazing ~ musicians of astonishing power
Kill Bill - Volume Two If you watched Kill Bill, volume two and also watched the special extra bits, you'll have seen a live performance of Chingon. Some of Chingon is included in the soundtrack of the movie. 'Mexican Spaghetti Western', however, is the whole enchilada! From start to finish, this is an album that captivates. What Chingon does with the classics is gorgeous beyond belief. I've long loved Mariachi music and many of my friends didn't understand what is was that moved me about the form. Sometimes one hears all that is and imagines all that is possible. This is musical fusion of Mariachi form with driving classical guitar riffs, screaming rock and a bit of exquisite jazz thrown in for good measure. 'Mexican Spaghetti Western' surpasses all that I'd imagined. The music literally soars. You will move to it, sing along with it, pick up an instrument and do your very best to become integrated within every moment. I am inspired, as I've been by the best playing of Frank Zappa, Coco Montoya, the mysterious José Souc from Santa Esmeralda.I'll not list every song on the album, as did the first reviewer. Per that review, the assessment of the songs is extremely accurate. For me at this time, the entire album feels like a guilty pleasure. It is music that is not intended to reside in the background, but compels me to crank up the stereo and be happily captive to the sound.IMO, there is not a single track on this album that isn't spectacular. I'll admit to being totally fascinated by 'Cuka Roka' with layer upon layer of intricacy with just a hint of berserk rhythm that creeps in like an extra-dimensional surprise and slips out just as you're beginning to become accustomed to its presence. This unpredictability is more than mere fun.. it is genius. There is fun to be had in the intensity of the interpretation of many classics, although there are songs of poignant beauty and expressions of a fire that rages within. I visualized many movies within my mind while listening ~ not just Kill Bill vol. 2. This music will take you on a journey through many landscapes. It is, quite simply, one of the greatest albums I've had the pleasure of hearing in many years and is one I'll listen to again and again because it is simply irresistible. It is my strongest recommendation that you play all the samples and know that this is one you really ought not let get away.

Terrific Guitar Band
Like many others, I heard about this band from the Kill Bill credits. I picked it up expected more like Malagueña Salerosa and got it! The sound this band puts out is, as I describe it, flamenco/rock. Three or four guitars -- electric, classical, acoustic, and bass -- feature prominently in their songs. There is only one English language song on the album with the rest being in Spanish or simply instrumental. The guitar work is clearly something they're quite proud of, and deservingly. Like many other guitar bands, they often channel harmonizing guitars individually to the left and right channel. I quite enjoy the vocals provided by Alex Ruiz (of Del Castillo). He's got a nice voice and sings both languages quite well.I have 2 gripes about this album. The first is on the song "Mexican Sausage Link." The trumpet player is too loud and trying to be loud in it. The offending part is only about 1 minute of the song, but that makes it my least favorite song on the album. The second is that the album is too short. Clocking in at a little over 45 minutes, it leaves me wanting a few more tracks before the album rewinds to the beginning again. In summary, with 10 2/3 of 11 tracks being excellent, outstanding guitar and vocal work, and a fantastic flamenco/rock sound, I highly recommend this album. Here's hoping they make a second album.

several outstanding songs
The cd is worth buying just for "Fideo del Oeste" and "Malaguena Salerosa," but you also get "Se Me Paro," "Severina," and "Rey de Los Chingones" along with "Mexican Sausage Link," "Siente Mi Amor," and "Cuka Roka." These are all songs I have listened to over and over since buying the album. If you like sad ballads, there are two: "Alacran y Pistolero," and one other. Robert Rodriguez was the guy who scored "Kill Bill" and Chingon performs Fideo and M. Salerosa on the Kill Bill 2 extra features. One caveat: You'll enjoy it a lot more if you can speak Spanish. If you don't, you can look up the lyrics with Google and then use the Explorer translate feature to know what the songs are about.

Electric mariachi
Some great twists on old classics, some great originals, all in all a fun album. Bajo sexto should have been in spanish though and some of the guitar solos are in an over indulgent Satriani/Vai style. Those are minor complaints, the only thing bad about this album is Cucka rocka. Cucka rocka sounds like every negative Mexican stereotype you can think of in audio form. i'm Mexican-American and this song is an embarrassment. If you can, get the copy that comes with the dvd/cd combo.

Favorite New CD!
I usually listen to music on random play, shuffling through 6 CD's in a carousel CD player. Not this one! I love it so much, it always stands alone, sometimes on the repeat mode for consecutive multiple listens. After seeing "Kill Bill", I fell in love with the soundtrack, but had no idea this CD existed until recently. Every track is outstanding, the arrangements are lush, the recording quality is excellent, and the musicianship is off the chain. This CD never fails to put a smile on my face and a song in my heart. Please, Robert Rodriguez, MORE of Chingon! MORE MORE MORE!

Chingoized, Malaguena Salerosa
This rendition of a classic bit of music by Chingon, a TexMex group specializing in what i term border music. The group lends it's own special style to this music, especially to a classic song, Malaguena Salerosa, this rendition of the song is the essence of this group's ability to "Chingoize" popular Mexican songs with a distinctive American rendition.A great bit of regional music that has popular appeal.

I ordered this cd because of the version of malaguena on kill bill (and the great performance on youtube by Chingon.I am really glad I bought it! the music is varied and always hot. Not just traditional songs (in fact maybe just a couple)but all very good music. I am keeping my eyes open for more music from him.
