Excellent surround av receiver and speakers a best buy for the buck!
As to this system, it is very good, excellent sound at low price. The subwoofer is a 6" passive, meaning it is powered by the built-in amplifier (don't let that dissuade you! It is AWESOME!). It has Bluetooth, and many connections for a variety of situations. I have enjoyed mine for a few months now and have few complaints. One is the 1080/ARC capability. It didn't work for my Roku, so I had to forgo using one HDMI cord to provide sound and picture for the 4 HDMI outlets in the back. I had to go back to an optical audio cable and use the HDMI ports on my TV. The PDF guide does tell you that the HDMI ARC capabilities are not guaranteed to work in every situation, so that is warning in advance. It was no problem for me since I have plenty of HDMI ports on my smart TV. Also, keep in mind that if you do want to use the HDMI ARC to provide audio and other HDMI devices, your TV must have an HDMI/ARC port. Overall a nice system, attractive, and the sound is good. I listen to symphonic music, classical, so sound quality is important to me. This one provides that quality. Update (2/26/21). I LOVE this system! I went to Youtube and played a "video" with audio frequencies from 20 to 20,000 hz. The subwoofer proved capable of playing the lowest tones, and the audio spectrum was even up to and past 10Khz (I can't hear above 10Khz!). This is a remarkable system. I am a true audiophile and component stereo enthusiast (since 1970). I listen to classical, symphonic music. I have played the 1812 Overture (with cannon!), the Saint-Saens "Organ Symphony" which really shows off the bass abilities of one's system with a massive pipe organ in the final movement. The Onkyo comes through amazingly well. Highly recommended!

Good system for the price.
Edit on 8/15/20: I changed my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars. I've had this system for a while now, and it still works great. I've moved into a house with no roommates, so I can blast the sound when I want, and it sounds great. I'm very happy with this system. My hdmi connection issues are gone since the move (I had tried different cables, but they may all have had problems with those devices. Cables have been the bain of my existence with hdmi.) Like the headline says, its a good system for the price. Older review: So far I like the Onkyo HT-S3900. I have roommates so I can't blast the base or the volume much. This is a good system for my environment. The only problem so far is my cable box (spectrum) and my Xbox One would not work when connected via hdmi. The cable box had the screen flicker and the audio would cut out every few seconds. The Xbox One would get a random black screen that would last about 5 to 10 seconds. I can still get surround sound with them by using the optical input from the tv, but I am disappointed I couldn't use the hdmi connection. My PC and my chromecast did connect just fine with the hdmi, and I could play videos without problem. The system sounds good. Hopefully this will last longer then the two Samsung surround sound systems I had. Both only lasted one year before going bad. Time will tell...

Really great for the cost
I wish the speaker wires were longer BUT the sound is awesome. Especially for the cost. I also like the Bluetooth option so I can pair my PC or cellphone to it and play music. It installed like a dream and input changing was smooth. This has to be one of the simplest setup I ever did with all the color coding and clearly labeled jacks/inputs etc. I have had both Denon and Onkyo for a long time. And will continue to do so.

Wonderful low cost receiver.
I initially had some trouble getting my Xbox One X to display 4K HDR through it, but managed to get it working after simply turning the receiver and Xbox off and back on again. Sound quality is great, the only problem I have with it isn't necessarily a problem with the receiver, but with the interaction of it with my TV and Xbox. I have my TV set to turn on when I turn my Xbox on, and for a brief moment when my TV turns on it sits at a loading screen as its waiting for a signal from the receiver. This occasionally causes the receiver to switch from the 'game' input which I have my Xbox on to the TV ARC input, so I have to find the remote to manually change it back to the 'game' input. Its a minor inconvenience, and it only happens occasionally. I purchased mine for $250, but it appears at the time of writing this its up to $340. There may be better options for that price elsewhere, but If the price is back around $250 or below, I would definitely recommend it. This is a great sound system for small to medium rooms, it sounds great, looks great, and haven't had any major issues with it so far. Something to note: it does have fairly large vent holes on the top, so if you keep it in a place where the top is exposed, i would recommend getting a cheap sheer curtain or mesh fabric, or other similar cloth that has very fine holes to keep pet hair and other small objects from falling in through it, without restricting air flow. Cut a rectangle out slightly larger than the vents and use small ceramic magnets or magnetic tape to hold it on without damaging the receiver.

I good unit for the money, works very well with my Amazon dot and Roku TV!
For the price this is an excellent unit. It was easy to set up and the wifi works well. The speakers were OK, but I had better speakers from my old stereo that died which improved the sound. The speakers that it came with were fine, but since I had better speakers, why not use them. At first I was using this unit with a USB thumb drive that had most of my music ripped from my CD collection, but found that with Amazon music and my Amazon dot, it was a much more convenient interface. It connected well to my ROKU tv in my room and it's nice to watch movies with 7.1 sound. I actually used two of the speakers from this unit with another Amazon dot and and old amplifier in my basement workshop. BTW, I do not work for Amazon! I just wanted to mention that since when I re-read this it sounded a bit like an advertisement. In short it's an excellent unit for the money.

This system was well packed in the box. Easy to unpack. Easy to set up. Comes with colour coded wires and speakers are labelled for placement. My TV room is about 10'x10' and this system fills it nicely. For movies I find it sounds best when on Dolby 5.1. All parts and pieces feel durable and well made. The speakers have great range. It appeared on my doorstep faster than I expected but, strangely enough, shows as being lost in transit on Amazon's website. Overall I am very happy with this purchase. No regrets. Updated September 13th. I love this system. The sound is wonderful. My only regret is not buying it sooner.

I like everything about it. I like how easy it is to select new devices. This system has a booming subwoofer and it is by far the best surround sound theatre system I’ve ever owned. Customer service is very polite and do there best to solve any issue I was having with this system. I will definitely be buying again in the future when I want to upgrade this Onkyo system for a 7.1 surround theatre system. Thank you for making a great system

Pretty satisfied overall! Purchased to replace my LG home theater in a box from late 2013 (it died). So now, onto my early impressions from the HT-S3900. My game/movie room is a very small one, a bedroom actually. It's about 8' x 8'. Onkyo recommends leaving the speakers set as "small," but after several tests (a few choice movies) I tried changing them all to "large" with the subwoofer on "plus." To my ears, this provided much fuller, louder, better sound with increased bass output. Before switching to "large," I was rather disappointed at first and assumed it wasn't a worthy successor to my old surround sound system. I was so, so wrong though and am very glad about that! While not quite as loud nor as powerful as my last (it was 1200 watts), it's fairly close. Close enough that I'm quite surprised and looking at the speaker size I thought there'd be no way it'd measure up. Do not let the little satellite/bookshelf type speakers fool you. Small size, but BIG sound. I can't imagine the sound would fill the room of a really big living room though without turning the volume up nearly, or all the way up. In my game room once I set it up as desired, a volume level of 45 (out of 74) is more than sufficient to make it bring movies to life and provide that desirable "punch." It's great, terrific even for smaller rooms. I've heard some people say the wires are too short, but they're not if setting up in a small room. There's an abundance of speaker wires and the surround ones need to be the longest and I had tons left over to spare. Perhaps if in a big room there may not be enough wire to reach though. Wanted to note also that the keyholes in the rear of the speakers is on the small side. I already have rear surround mounting brackets from my old surround system, but there was no way to attach my speakers to them as there's no way to screw anything into them. They're incompatible with my $180 rear surround mounts. Instead I placed them on top, they're sitting loose up there but left undisturbed they should be okay. Same thing with the front left and right speakers. They only have a keyhole to hang off a screw. Well I purchased a pair of speaker stands for these speakers along with the Onkyo unit. The screws provided with the speaker stands (none are provided with the Onkyo) were a bit too large to fit into the keyholes, so I had to just place them on top of the stands onto a two way sticker. So they are somewhat secure, as long as not jostled. Be aware that you may run into installation issues as I have. Just something to keep in mind.
