LSD My Problem Child (4th Edition): Reflections on Sacred Drugs, Mysticism and Science

Interesting Books about Psychedelics
I was interested to know what LSD's creator thought about this notorious drug. I was also curious to know how he accidentally came across this drug. This book explains how Dr. Hofmann came across LSD; and the background of what scientists at Sandoz labs were trying to accomplish at that time.Dr. Hofmann experimented with not only with LSD in controlled laboratory settings, but numerous other psychedelics. This books gives the reader some cold, hard information about LSD (and other psychedelics) that is not filtered through prohibitionists' hands.Dr. Hofmann also writes about the more spiritual aspects of psychedelics that people may find extremely interesting - especially in this spiritually-starved, materialistic world. He also writes how certain cultures treat various psychedelics as a sacred substance. This book has a lot of excellent information about LSD and numerous other psychedelics that will interest people who are tired of prohibitionist propaganda; and desire cold, hard facts. There is probably no better source about LSD than the man who created it.

An aid to meditation aimed at the mystical experience of a deeper, comprehensive reality
This is the Word from the discoverer of the most important chemical since gunpowder, and even more potent. Just think: .00001 grams of LSD are enough to send you soaring far beyond the stratosphere. That's one-ten-thousandth of a gram, folks! This is one serious molecule! It is almost as if it had been specifically designed to do what it does to our brains. While Hofmann decries what the Hippies made of his discovery, he strongly believed in its therapeutic potential, and continued to take it throughout his life, the last time at age 97.Amusingly, in this book, Hofmann reveals that Timothy Leary, while at Harvard, tried to order 100 grams of LSD from Sandoz Labs, enough for one million trips! The final chapter of this book is entitled "LSD experience and Reality", and attempts to integrate the inventor's ultimate reflections on his discovery and what it means. Here are the concluding words of this amazing book: "I see the true importance of LSD in the possibility of providing material aid to meditation aimed at the mystical experience of a deeper, comprehensive reality. Such use accords entirely with the essence and working character of LSD as a sacred drug."

Must read part of psychedelic history & culture
Phenomenal account of Hoffman’s incredible, synchronistic journey through space time. Was almost like having him in the room telling you the story, his distinct writing makes the tale of his life come to color in his witty and magnanimous tone. Hoffman’s legacy lives on through all of us every time we inject his magical molecule and see the miracle of life with new eyes.Would recommend to anyone interested in his work or psychedelics in general. His work covered a much larger scope than I even knew and super grateful to see how much he actually did it is inspirational to do even more!

Valuable because of its author
Interesting mostly because it comes from the perspective of the man who synthesized LSD, a scientist with a careful and systematic approach to this extremely powerful substance and its natural relatives. Interestingly, LSD's potential as a psychiatric tool was grasped immediately and a small circle of dedicated professionals used it successfully for 15 years in research in the 'conservative' 1940s and 50s.Hoffman is an antidote to the over-the-top ravings of the recreational psychedelic users of the 1960s to the present who remain convinced that 'The Man' shut down LSD research because they were afraid it was too revolutionary to society. What happened was much less dramatic and more straightforward. The youth culture of the 60s got ahold of the drug and recklessly abused it, and irresponsible advocates like Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert* of Harvard further created bad publicity for the drug. The American government overreacted in the banning of LSD in 1966, but understandably so.Unfortunately (perhaps unsurprisingly), the book is quite dry and clinical through much of the second half, where Hofmann gives an account of certain events in his work in a rather dull fashion. The chapter containing vivid descriptions of LSD trips and the therapeutic benefits gained by various users is interesting, as are his closing reflections. Perhaps the most moving part is the brief foreword in which Hofmann relates the entire 102-year-story of his life, from hearing the booming of the guns of the First World War in an alpine valley where he spent much of his childhood to his final years in another alpine valley.*To his immense credit, Richard Alpert - now Ram Dass - used the initial insights gained by LSD to become one of the foremost spiritual teachers of the past half century, and did not follow Leary into his tailspin of paranoia and gross misbehaviour.

AN INSIDE LOOK THROUGH THE EYES OF THE FATHER OF LSD
Albert Hoffmann describes his experiences, the people he has met from hippies to PH.D's, his view on lsd before he died, his perceptive for the true use of LSD and what he hopes for it in the future with great empathyHe gets deep into the chemistry of LSD and its psychedelic close relatives which can lose the reader he/she is not educated in chemistry, but even so it is very interesting and amazing to read, one will capture information either way. I enjoy reading the chemistry part of the book it really grasps your attention and gives you a lot of information.Albert Hoffman writes in a beautiful and understanding way that the reader will enjoy and look forward to keep reading, he keeps bringing back past subjects in the book to remind you what he was talking about, if one forgets even slightlyOverall the book for me is a 5 point star, I recommend this book to anyone how has done at least some basic research on LSD or any hallucinogen and is passionate about it, as i mention he is very deep and his passion is immense
