This release marks the third time an unused score by composer
Jerry Goldsmith has been officially made available to the public with the other two being "Legend" and "Timeline" (already out of print and a highly priced and prized collectiuble) and after hearing this music I'm hard pressed as to why the producers thought a collection of songs could give a better noirish atmosphere than Goldsmith's evocative, quirky and suspenseful score. The overall sound of the music is reminiscent in parts of "Basic Instinct" and the gritty "L.A. Confidential" and while this music never quite rises to the heights of those two scores he does come very close in parts, especially in my favorite cue "Roy's Last Minute/Helga's Last Minute" which I find very taut and suspenseful. He also composed a lighthearted Italian flavored tune ("Dosmo's Theme") for the Danny Aiello character of the film. "Two Days in the Valley" is proof that just because a score is rejected by the filmmakers doesn't mean that its bad, just that some movie makers don't really understand the function of music in film, or just that they figure they'll make more money with a song album rather than a dramatic score that better serves theneeds of the picture and Goldsmith's music is better than what they did use. Now, hopefully Intrada will release his rejected score to "The Public Eye", a score which recording engineer Eric Tomlinson (who was at those sessions) said was excellent. We can only wait and see-----and hope.

A great unused score.
I had never even heard of the movie "2 Days in the Valley" until I saw this album. I purchased this album on blind faith because I figured it's Jerry Goldsmith, it can't be bad. When I first heard it, I found it terrific. One gets reminded of his work on "L.A. Confidential" because of the solo trumpet heard in the score. I also found similarities between "Sleeping with the Enemy" and "Basic Instinct". But this score if beautiful to listen to. I can't believe it was rejected, but as others have said, this isn't the only time a Goldsmith score was rejected.
