Makes me miss him!
What memories! Music was fine but liner notes had been wet and we’re stuck together. Steamed some apart, not all. Problem with buying used.

Review of Hoyt Axton's ' Flashes Of Fire'
First heard Axton back in the 80's. Don't hear any of his stuff these dayshere in Oz - which is a pity because he has a distinctive, rich and powerfulvoice - really impressive compared to most of today's wanna be/s.Not the best selection of his work, I think, but does at least have thewonderful 'Evangelina' and 'Flash Of Fire".An impressive 'Golden Oldie' - up there with the best of them...

"The Very Best" From A Songwriting Genius
This is a terrific CD! A collection of Hoyt's "Very Best" songs from 1962-80, it contains many that have been covered by hugely popular bands like Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf, as well as many that are less well known. All are outstanding, and as for the ones that have been covered, I like Hoyt's own versions better! I highly recommend this one. It's all going on my iPod. :-)

Best compilation of overlooked star
Hoyt Axton grew up in the business of making music. With obvious regard to his mother and her song writing efforts, Hoyt carried the family music torch for several decades. It's a mystery why he never quite got his just due with Billboard charts and radio air-play. No matter, if you're interested in country, folk, story songs, or just fine music, Hoyt Axton's Flashes of Fire will not disappoint!

Classic Hoyt Axton
A good production of Axtons' classic compositions, though some of the live performance recordings are less than stellar. If you are looking for "The Pusher" that was part of the "Easy Rider" soundtrack, you need to get Steppenwolf's version--not this one.

Hoyt was a terrific artist and songwriter.
A second generation song writer. His mother Mae Boren Axton co wrote "Heartbreak Hotel." The Hoyt's Very Best cd is a treasure of great songs.

The Great Hoyt.
Hoyt is an excellent singer and writer. This has the best of his songs over his career. I would recommend it.

sadly missed songwriter/singer
Hoyt Axton has long been one of my favourite mid-sixties balladeers alongside Jackson C Frank and John Kay. Of this threesome only John Kay survives and for Hoyt and Jackson we are left with their recorded works for company. Amazingly it was through the hard rock band Steppenwolf that I discovered the work of Hoyt the solo guitarist & balladeer as he was the composer of 2 of Steppenwolf's great songs - 'Snow Blind friend' and 'The Pusher'. Both are included in this compilation along with 'Joy to the world' (made famous by 3 Dog Night, label mates of Steppenwolf.)No 'best of' collection can ever replace a collection of original albums with their artwork, sleeve notes and hidden gems which would never have been 'hits' but are still great songs. However, this compilation of 25 tracks comes very, very close with the three songs mentioned above + Evangelina, Flash Of Fire, Light This Candle,Free Sailing, Della And The Dealer, Rusty Old Halo amongst the roll call. If you don't know Hoyt's work this is the best place to start.

Success
Been long time fan of Hoyt Axton. All previous albums on vinyl, so could not resist a cd compilation with lots of favourite tracks on it.

No Gremlins in this collection
Much underrated folk songwriter with a big voice who you may know better from the film "Gremlins" (the silly dad who buys his son an exotic pet for Christmas with dire consequences). A good collection with high quality sound. Note: "Greenback dollar" is a live version, very good but has a few whoops and hollers from the audience.
