Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

A Docs convert!
My husband needed some brown casual shoes that were not hiking boots or sneakers but didn't look too dressy. He's never worn Docs before although I have worn them (and love them) for at least 25 years. He tried some on at the mall but they didn't have the color he wanted so we found them on Amazon and had them just a couple of days later. I was so surprised that he liked them and was able to wear them right out of the box with no break in period. In fact, he commented on how cushy they are. He's typically a 9.5 and a size 8UK fit him nicely although he will probably add an innersole as they become more broken in. I'm pleased that he's pleased with a great pair of good looking shoes that will last for many years!

Disappointing customer service.
I really like the look and general construction of this shoe. It's high quality leather and seemed quite rugged when first purchased. A month and a half on, I just this morning found the sole on one shoe is completely separated along the inside edge. Obviously, they haven't been worn enough to explain the failure -- I've basically worn them daily, but at a mostly desk job. This is obviously a manufacturing defect rather than a durability issue per se. I'm following up with Dr Martens and will update this review accordingly.Update: I emailed Doc Martens with details of the problem. They emailed back a form message asking for the details (again) in order to issue an RMA. I then learned that *I* would be responsible for shipping the shoes back to Portland and that they don't do repairs, but would instead make a determination whether they're defective and then send a new pair. I figured it might be cheaper than shipping just to have the split shoe repaired by a cobbler. When I took it in to a local shop, they basically told me they wouldn't have a lot of confidence in a repair and that I should instead send them in for replacement. They also told me they've seen the same thing on other Doc Martens, and that their quality has slipped since they went overseas.I finally ate the $22 (!) shipping fee and am now waiting on the replacement. They cost me enough that I'll keep wearing them, but I'll be sure to tell anyone who asks about the shoes what a lousy experience I had. And I won't be buying any Doc Martens in the future.Update #2: After receiving my replacement shoes, I wore them for a season before the new pair separated along the sole *again* just like the previous pair. The other reviews here describe the problem, so see those for details and pictures. But since I've seen the same defect in 2 consecutive pairs, this is clearly a systematic problem. Do not buy these shoes -- you'll end up regretting it.

These shoes are awesome! I've worn them 4-5 days a week for 3 months and they still look brand new. I have somewhat wide and flat feet, and they fit me well. They're comfortable for walking, working in the office, travelling, driving, you name it. The gum sole is well made and very comfortable without being too squishy. The heel is substantial, which I like. I particularly like the unpadded collar - that always seems to be the first part to deteriorate with this type of shoe, regardless of brand. These shoes are FAR better quality than similar Dr. Marten's I've purchased in mall stores for the same price. I have a feeling that these Docs will last me for at least a few years, and probably longer.

Shoes are ok, but not durable.
The shoes fit well, and the appearance is great. Unfortunately, the quality does not seem to live up to the original Dr. Marten reputation. The soles on these started splitting less than a year after they were purchased. I only wear them at work (office job), and never really tried to test the limits of their durability.I owned a pair of Dr. Martens when they used to be made in England, and them until I literally wore through the soles. It's disappointing that these didn't turn out the same way.

Size, Fit, Comfort and Quality. Air Wair
What a great shoe! I picked these out after wearing through a previous pair casual brown dress shoes by Generra. However, my frugality made me purchase a cheaper pair of browns. They just didn't fit well. Having owned (and currently own a pair of mottled red 3/4 top leather Docs) I knew that this pair should be good.Little did I expect it to be so much better. The sizing is spot on. I wear a size 9W Army boot and a size 10 Asics running shoe. The size 9 Doc Marten is perfect. Not too wide and not too narrow.Best of all, my wife loves them on me.Buy an enjoy.
