Why bulb burns hot... HOW TO fix that SonyTV!
Basically that TV uses 2 fans to cool the bulb. The smaller top blower fan gets plugged with house dust after years in service! The new bulb gets too hot then dies prematurely for lack of proper cooling. So when you get to replacing bulb, clean your top fan while awaiting for parts shipment. To fix this you simply need to clean up the fan blades with a toothpick and brush. Sony did NOT engineer that TV for easy service... Top primary fan is a bitch and half to remove the first time. (I've cleaned mine twice already each time I swap bulb, every 5 years). Arm yourself with patience and a philips screw driver to take it out! Also for the larger secondary fan that pull hot air out, I've added a plastic sheet mod to create a tunnel and suck air from bulb area instead of from the useless botom vent slots (as shown on one of my pics)The good news is the original ballast board is still mint after 12+ years and couple bulbs. It always ignites the bulb with high voltage on first strike, just like new.

Aftermarket Lamp for Sony
Most of these tvs came with a bulb that was made by Osram in Germany. This bulb from Mexico is a suitable replacement. Hard to tell if its back to its original brightness because the tv is almost 8 years old but it looks great. I guess if you want to be sure you can give Sony $200 but for $35 this one is hard to beat. The Osram or Phillips (sold as replacement by Sony) are probably just a tad more pure white. Out of the box this bulb does leave a barely noticeable pink on pure white and the pure black is ever so slightly grey. I just wanted to have tv while I shopped for a new one but I now Im going to keep this one for a while since it looks great. Bad smell went away after a few days. Easy install- especially if you still have the manual! Comes with tool but save the screws from your old lamp. Also try "cool" setting or play with the color and you can make it look awesome. The aftermarket Phillips for like $100 are not the same ones Sony sells but I cant judge the quality...ONE YEAR UPDATE: After about a year the TV picture has become very dark. This happened gradually and I realized I would have to replace the bulb. Upon removing it, I know where the bad smell people complain about came from. The lamp completely melted the plastic housing which made removal and install of the new lamp a real pain. I decided to try this one especially since it came with a one year warranty and so far it is working great.... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005PXPH78/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1I originally gave this product five stars but I have to take it down to three... I plan on reviewing http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005PXPH78/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1soon....

Our 10 y.o. TV is new again!
As it turns out, we're not going blind. It was just the TV getting dimmer. Remind me to buy it another new bulb in 2021 rather than wait for it to burn out. With a new bulb, it's much brighter and the colors are more vibrant. I remember having noticed the same thing around 2010-2011 when it was replaced the first time. Back then the cheapest alternative was to buy just the bulb and keep the housing. The naked bulb was about $80. This is a great deal. Housing and what I could see of the bulb were identical to the original, but without the crystallization of the plastic from the many years of heat. It even included a hex wrench for the new mounting screws. The packaging was designed like the plastic sheet suspension system used to ship smartphones. It's common for electronic components under high stress to have 1-3% early failure rate. (I hope no one calls it "infant mortality rate" anymore.) These are devices that, if they fail, there's a very high chance it will happen very shortly after first use. So, if it's going to die on you, it will most likely be BEFORE Amazon's 90-Day Warranty runs out. Even if it fails later, it was worth the risk considering the cost of an OEM bulb/enclosure and the ease of replacement.Season 4, Episode 10, was a blockbuster by the way. Sky blue, trees green, blood red.

Works well but longevity is a concern.
I have purchased two of these since November 2016. The first lasted from November 2016 to April 2017. I'm going to be generous and say that it lasted half of the first and last month it was used, so it lasted about five months. The sad part is that I have another TV and the television this lamp was in isn't used that much. I ordered another lamp in late May 2017 and so far so good. I inherited the television and I'm not an AV connoisseur, so I don't know how the quality and start up compares to an original. To my eye, the picture quality looks great and the time for the screen to completely light up is acceptable. I'm not thrilled with the longevity though. We'll see how this one works out. For what it's worth, the first and second lamp were slightly different. The first had a metal lid and phillips head fasteners. The second had a plastic lid and allen head fasteners. They both came in completely different packaging. At less than $20 a pop, it isn't terribly painful to spend the money, but how many times am I going to be willing to spend the money?

Great price for product
I have the "pleasure" of owning a Sony Wega rear projection TV that at the time of purchase, 10 years ago, had the best picture quality in the appliance store but now is somewhat of a pain every few years when the lamp burns out. I just found out that I am supposed to replace it sooner than when it burns out for better picture quality, but I really don't think it is noticeable. I was lucky when I purchased it because I bought the floor model, which I was told would burn out much faster, but the first bulb actually lasted 7 years. I could not find the model number and was browsing through amazon, when amazingly I came across the most wonderful thing, which was a "purchased in 2012" heading on this product. Did not even need to go any further in my search. The price was so much better than expected. Truth be told I would pay a lot more. I only had to pay $7.99 to get in overnight and now my 10 year old Wega TV is working like new.

So perfect product but crazy drop off service
Product was exactly what we needed! However, we left a note on our front door requesting that the product be left at certain address ( right across the street) as we left for 3 days, Thanksgiving weekend. The driver DID NOT do as requested. He took the note off the door and placed it on top of the product and left the box on our front door step.Thank goodness our awaiting neighbour saw what happened and picked up the box for us!So perfect product but crazy drop off service!!!

Garbage don't buy.
Bulb is dimmer than old bulb it replaced, and didn't even last a month before it died.
