Frustrating text
Terrible book. It's written in some cross between mangled corporate-ese and the language of a 4th grader's overloaded book report, where the student is trying to score points with the teacher by throwing in as many 50-cent words as possible, with no regard as to how well those words actually enhance the discussion. There are almost no clear, concise explanations. Topics contain nitty-gritty details without going into how those details fit into the bigger picture. Words with very precise meanings are introduced with no indication of what is meant. Several paragraphs felt pointless, as they did nothing to further the student's understanding of the material. There is a whole lot of "what", but very little "why." The "why", however, is important. If you are somehow forced to use this text for a class, I highly recommend picking up a used/global copy of Ian Sommerville's Software Engineering text and reading it with the Tsui text. That book actually gives you context to understand the field of software engineering as a whole, so that the different aspects studied actually fit together in a cohesive manner.
