San Fermin has taken on a more popular style with lush harmonies and catchy pop melodies "no promises" should be a few hits in there.

There a parts of this that I like very much (typically the female vocal leads), but overall it is somewhat inconsistent by my taste. I am glad that there are artists who are pushing the boundaries, but also appreciate that iTunes has a shuffle feature

San Fermin keep things well off center on their new release Belong while exuding more confidence this time out. Touring and festival sets have served them well as there is more of a cohesive whole here rather than a sum of the parts. The looped vocals of Open and Bride evoke the old school experimentation of Laurie Anderson while modern pop melodies percolate throughout the album. As is sung on Dead, some of the songs are sticky sweet on the outside but thankfully complex below the surface. A few tracks veer towards straight pop or soul, however Ellis Ludwig-Leone and his crew take things mercifully back off the main line in most cases. Intricately crafted and organic as well, San Fermin adds to what looks to be a solid string of Spring releases.Also reviewed on my Instagram: finelytunedsounds

Musically very accomplished, lyrically their weakest offering.

Like their previous albums from this wonderfully indiosycratic band, this just gets better and better with subsequent listenings. Received it yesterday and haven't stopped playing it since. Outstanding stuff!

Es ist schon irgendwie traurig. Das Album ist schon seit knapp vier Wochen draußen, doch ich bin der erste der eine Rezension schreibt.Belong ist mittlerweile das dritte Album von San Fermin. Doch hier in Deutschland hat kaum einer Notiz von dieser fantastischen Band genommen.Ich muss zugeben, dass ich beim ersten Mal anhören des neuen Albums etwas enttäuscht war. Es hat sich etwas getan im Sound der Band. Alles klingt elektronischer und kompakter. So findet man keine Interludes mehr.Aber was mich enttäuschte war, dass Sänger Allen Tate nur in wenigen Songs zu hören ist. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt diesmal mehr auf Sängerin Charlene Kaye.Auch zündete keiner der Songs sofort bei mir. Songs wie Emily, Bar oder Jackrabbit von ihren letzten Alben hatten Hitpotenzial und schmeichelten sich sofort ins Ohr.Doch Belong muss man sich erarbeiten und wird dafür auch reich belohnt. Denn an ihrer Mischung aus dem zauberhaften Pop einer Florence and The Machine und der Melancholie von The National hat sich nichts geändert.August und No Promises sind klare Popsongs. Trotzdem ist in ihnen genug zu entdecken, dass sie nicht einfach als belanglos abgestempelt werden können. Mastermind Ellis Ludwig- Leone, der alle Songs schreibt aber lieber den Nerd am Keyboard gibt und seine zwei Gesangskünstlern die Show überlässt, hat Klassik studiert und lässt das in seinen barocken Klugscheißerpop einfließen.Es ist eine wahre Freude wenn Songs wie Oceanica oder Better Company sich nach hinten heraus öffnen und sich entladen. Doch der Höhepunkt bleibt für mich der Titelsong Belong. Allen Tate leistet mit seiner tiefen Stimme ganze Arbeit und bereitet für Charlene den Weg. Der Moment in dem sie mit ihrer Stimme rein schneidet ist einfach nur traumhaft.Insgesamt ist das Album textlich persönlicher ausgefallen. Denn es geht um persönliche Ängste.So steht am Ende ein traumhaftes Album, dass einem in seinen Bahn zieht. Weil Pop so schön und aufregend sein kann, wenn eine Band wie San Fermin sich eben nicht dem Mainstream ergibt. Das liegt daran, dass die Band gerne auch mal quer schießt und so ihren Songs einige Ecken und Kanten verschafft.Ich kann nur hoffen, dass diese wunderbare Band doch noch die Aufmerksamkeit bekommt die sie mit ihren großartigen Kammerpop verdienen.

Expected great things from this album; was not disappointed.
