I hope JCO lives forever because her writing is unmatched. She has a way of describing the inner conflicting thought-mind, that I've not found elsewhere.

Warning: These stories have appeared in other publication before this book was published.So don't be surprised if they seem familiar.Her books are getting smaller and smaller.None-the-less, this compilation is vintage Joyce Carol Oates. It's creepy, scary and weird. The stories will leave you hanging in mid-air, wanting more.

With nearly all of the tales in "Dis Mem Ber" just as I was getting ready to give up and read something else, Joyce Carol Oates beat me to the punch by suddenly ending the story as if she were saying, "Yeah, I'm bored with this one, too. Let's just stop." The one story that evoked genuine horror and fascination -- a sadistic father on a drive with his four, then only three, daughters -- seemed to be punitive to readers the way it mesmerizes and shocks only to have the author abruptly end it with what appears to be a joke punch line that means nothing. J.C. Oates finest writing was done in the late sixties and early seventies. After "Do With Me What You Will" half (not all, but a full half) of her novels and stories read like a student who was aping or doing a parody of her writing. We have to wonder how she would rate one of her students whose work she was familiar with if that student had handed in stories with the same old themes that the student hadn't even bothered to microwave to room temperature.

I am amazed at the range Oates is capable of. Insightful novels, poetry, and dark, dark stories. She never misses.

Joyce Carol Oates is a phenomenal writer and has yet to write a book of fiction I have not enjoyed. The character development she is able to achieve in her short stories rivals what it takes other authors entire books to achieve. Don’t miss out on this one!
