The vertical caver's bible
Very informative and comprehensive. Lots of variety in approaches to both common and uncommon circumstances vertical cavers encounter. While detailed and cautionary enough to be a "how to manual", folks new to vertical caving should always initially utilize experienced tutelage by seasoned vertical cavers until a range of the techniques and methods described in this book become ingrained.

Excellent vertical caving reference book
This is a classic book on caving which should be an essential read for anyone interested in exploring vertical caves.

You can learn about new equipment, rappell/belay devices via vendors this book holds true 2019 and on. hopefully the authors live on to reap the rewards as does the learner

well worth the money
i was reluctant to buy this book due to the cost and that it never seems to go on sale. all i can tell you there was i was nuts to not think it would be worth it. there is so much information crammed in here. it is very well written. there are awesome pictures and diagrams on how to rig. the author tells you want tackle or hardware to use where. there is absolutely no substitute for a good teacher in the climbing world. but this book is a great standby to remind you. if you took the time to read my review, thank you, and you should have already bought this book.

Cool but consider getting the first edition too...
I bought this book to learn vertical caving and teach Venture Crew members. The local Grotto helped. We hoped to learn Prusiking (3 knot rope ascending), but the details in the second edition aren't as good as the 1st edition. The Grotto guy sent me some photo copies of the first edition that clarified stuff in the second addition.I now own both additions. This is a must have if you do vertical caving or want to do vertical caving. The window washing info, and circus rigging is cool but I don't think we will rig a trapeze any time soon... Talk around, perhaps the 1st addition is for you!

My only regret is that I couldn't find an electronic version -- would be great to have this on my phone and with me ...
If you do anything with ropes -- from arborist to caver to rigging circus tents -- this is the go-to book. My intent was to buy it as a reference, but ended up reading it cover-to-cover over the holidays, because I just couldn't put it down.My only regret is that I couldn't find an electronic version -- would be great to have this on my phone and with me 24/7.

Not impressed
I am sorry to say that I am not impressed by this book at all. I own a speleology school and have been caving for more than 20 years. I purchased a copy for our club library, mainly for our students. I read the book though and was very surprised to find it very USA biased and even to spot some inaccurately presented "facts" (no, guys, the kernmantle rope was NOT invented by Blue Water, it was invented in 1953 by EDELRID, mentioned in the book only briefly in "other rope companies"). The quality of the line drawings is plain awful. Is it really so hard to find an artist who can actually draw? Any art academy kid would do better. The book covers mainly the American style rope techniques (aka IRT). European rigging practices are not examined well, although they are more modern and well accepted by virtually all serious expedition teams (US included). I would not recommend this book. If you want something of real value, buy "Alpine Caving Techniques: A Complete Guide to Safe and Efficient Caving" also sold by Amazon. It is an excellent book which covers the same topics, only better.I know I will get a lot of comments defending "On Rope" but this is my opinion. There are better books out there, written by more knowledgeable folks and produced in higher quality.

In the outdoors never follow others advice.
Do not buy this book on rope.its got silly pencil drawings yet again.new 100 quid.in all fairness 25 quid only. It's over emphasized yet again.but does not give clear coloured step by step pictures involving abseiling techniques stage by stage. My shibari books put this dribble in the shade.this book is to far industrial.and over the top.as an outdoor bushcrafter and sea angler, the best techniques are the improvised type and they do work, this is overkill techniques that involve carrying to much equipment.and the styles in this book are totally unnecessary.the best results are the simple ones in the great outdoors.by the way,if your looking for good knots to survive, look else where.there not in here.
