CV4 Large Diaphragm Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone. The Miktek CV4 is a classic large-diaphragm tube condenser design that delivers a huge sound. Artists, producers and seasoned engineers will be able to dial-in the exact sound they're looking for using the CV4's nine selectable polar patterns. The bottom end is big, warm and tight, with mids that are present and even, along with a high frequency response that’s sweet and airy. The CV4 is ideal for recording single vocalists, and perfect for acoustic instruments, groups of vocals, piano, string ensembles, winds, overheads on a drum kit or as ambient room mics. This unique capsule features dual 1-inch diaphragms manufactured using 5-micron Mylar with a 0.4-micron layer of evaporated gold, which is precisely tensioned, mounted to carefully-tuned backplates, and set back-to-back to create the final capsule. Tight tolerances and special attention to precise machining of the backplate produce a linear off-axis response that ensures the accuracy of the microphone. The heart and soul of the CV4’s head amplifier is the AMI BT4 transformer, which offers a classic sound and an extended low frequency response found in the earliest versions of the most famous vintage tube microphones. Together with an original NOS (new-old-stock) Telefunken EF800 tube, in which the high-voltage circuit has been uniquely implemented, the microphone challenges the performance of the best-in-class industry standards without hesitation. The Miktek CV4 is hand-built using components from the US, Europe and Asia, and is tested and packaged in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Each microphone includes its serialized frequency response graph created during final testing.

Fantastic sound for the price -- or just fantastic sound, period.
I don't give out many 5-star reviews, but this mic blew my mind. I was lucky enough to find one second-hand for $1000. To quickly audition the mic we put it up as a drum overhead and then tried it on acoustic guitar & were rewarded with amazing detail, silky, euphonic high end, lovely midrange... I was super impressed. As a mono overhead on the drums, I could hear the different timbres of the two crash cymbals in detail, with much greater clarity than with the small condenser mics I had. The snare sounded snappy and clear... very nice. For these two applications, this mic easily topped the other condenser mics in my home studio (Gefell UM70s, Calrec small diaphragm, Audiotechnica 4051a, Soundelux U195, Neumann M582, and Schoeps CMC4 in hyper-cardioid (although the Neumann also is great on acoustic guitar, just a different flavor). Beyond the excellent sound of the mic, the nine polar patterns are hugely useful -- we were able to get different drum sounds simply by changing patterns on the mic. If you are using a home studio as I am, the polar patterns really help reject the room sound if your space is less than perfect acoustically. A real winner!Look around the web for some of the buzz on this mic. While I don't have a lot of experience with super high-end, expensive microphones, I have been working in studios as a musician for many years and consider myself to have excellent ears. I'm thinking of buying a second CV-4 so I can have a stereo pair. I haven't needed any help from Miktek at this point, but from what I hear, their customer service is excellent.
