Q: The dimensions, 12.5 by 11 make them almost square. They don't look square -- what are the dimensions?

Thanks for your question - The "Product Dimensions" actually refers to the size of the wrapped/packaged item. The pair of placemats are folded in half in their wrapping, hence that size (and the 1.5" depth!). If you refer to the bullet points and to the "Product Description" those areas will clarify that the placemats themselves are approx. 10" x 20" each. Hope this helps!
