Coconut Oil The benefits of coconut oil for the skin and hair have been mentioned in ancient Ayurveda. Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft and replaces natural moisture in the hair. Unlike other oils used in shampoo formulations, it helps minimise protein loss during washing to keep each hair strand strong. Coconut oil keeps protein loss at a minimum because of its close association with hair proteins. Smaller MCTs or MCFAs can pass freely through the cell membrane, enabling efficient penetration inside the hair shaft. When coconut oil is mixed in shampoo, the medium chain fatty acids like Capric Acid, Caprylic Acid and Myristic Acid, nourish the skin and make the hair root and follicles healthy. These components are good antioxidants and thus prevent untimely ageing and falling of hair. Coconut oil is an efficient moisture retainer and does not let the skin dry out. This prevents breakage of hair.
