Q: Can it be used without the shelf to put a small garage can under?

It would be kind of wobbly. The shelf can be put at any height. I'd think even at the very top would be better than leaving it off.

Q: What is the gauge of the steel in this table?

I apologize. I said 16 gauge, but it’s more like 24 gage. It’s super tough to know exactly without a micrometer and the ends are rolled. I wouldn’t be hammering on it or doing any heavy duty wood/metal work on it. It can definitely hold a lot of pounds but when it’s placed on it. My nephew kind of let go too fast (didn’t gently) place a 120lb sewing machine on the top of this the other day and now it has the mount bolt impression haha but I still love it. It’s more for food and deli use but we’re using it as a flash drying station for t shirts when we cure our screen print orders. Our flash dryer isn’t blowing direct heat on it but when a standard shirt is on top and the flash dryer is doing it’s job, it’s blowing over 300 degrees. Hope this helps you.
