Covers the basics but fails to prepare you for the actual exam.
This book is well written and will help in becoming Vcp550 certified. It sticks to the exam blueprint exclusively. The main reason I am knocking this down by two stars to three is because the practice questions do not even come close to preparing you for the actual exam. Let me make his clear, to pass the exam, you will need to not only know the basics (what this book covers) but also have a working knowledge of VMware and how to troubleshoot different scenarios. This guide is supposed to help you prepare for the exam, but the practice questions do not even come close to the type of questions you will receive on the exam. For this reason, I recommend Mastering VMware vSphere 5.5 Paperback – November 4, 2013 by Scott Lowe (Author), Nick Marshall (Author) over this book because it covers (or at least mentions) more of these types of tools and procedures. I also recommend downloading the exam blueprint from VMware's site and reading ALL of the supplemental materials. Best of luck to you all.

Missing Key Topics
This book fails as an exam preparatory guide and should be marketed as a companion. While it covers subjects included on the exam blueprint, it completely avoids others, several of them of significant importance. vCenter Operations Manager can make up a prominent number of questions on the test but this book does not address it at all. Same with PowerCLI and VMware Update Manager. There is a brief mention of the latter two but that's it.

Brian Atkinson's book is 10x better.
Update2:I have now finished reading all 3 books for VCP550 that are available. This one is THE WORST.My new favorite is 'Mastering VSPHERE' - THE only complete material you need to pass.Update:I am now more than halfway done with this book and the flaws just keep entertaining me.Let me ask you this, what section of the book do you think 'Vcenter Server Capacity' is discussed under? NOT Vcenter! It is 3 chapters later buried between two useless 'click-through' tutorials on how to Clone a VM. Seriously.Have you heard horror stories of people showing up on VCP5-DV and thinking they scheduled the Expert exam?Well, those folks must have been studying using this book.Original Review:I own 2 books that I am using to study for the VCP exam: this one and a book by Brian Atkinson (also on Amazon, I rated that one 5 stars)Brian's book has 300 MORE pages then this.I HIGHLY recommend you get both as this one has gaps. MANY gaps.Even the first chapter describing Editions and fails accurately describing various editions comprehensively. Instead you get "look on the website" reference.Complex questions about various versions and editions are 100% guaranteed on the exam. If I wanted to look on the website I would read Vmware whitepapers not buy a book.Any way, I have not yet tested myself other than practice exams and I find this book Lacking and frustrating.

Absolutely inadequate to pass the VCP5-DCV exam!
Absolutely inadequate to prepare you for the VCP5-DCV exam. DO NOT RELY ON THIS BOOK. I did not pass using this book as my primary study-guide. I have also taken the 5-day class. The practice exam and study-questions did not come close in difficulty to the real exam. I'm supremely disappointed and out $220USD (thanks Bill!). The material in the book is high-level and mostly screen-shots. I assumed that since this was the official guide, it would represent the exam; that was not the case.If you want to pass your VCP5-DCV, buy another book.

Don't let this be your definitive guide to the exam.
The questions pre/post chapter and the material is mainly the same thing you get from the VCP class. This is NOT enough to pass the exam. With the exam now having more questions and less time/question, it is imperative to take as many practice exams, study your wrong answers to determine the proper material it was sources from, and watch time management when taking the actual exam. It can get away from you.

Not the best way to educate yourself
Not the best way to educate yourself. The way the material is structured does not lend itself to easy learning.

Move along. Nothing to see here.
I bought this book to renew my crusty old VCP and, given that it's the offical cert guide, I expected it to... you know... prepare me for the exam. It will not do this. If you're in sales and want to know more about the features of vSphere 5.5, this is the book for you. Lots of pictures. Small words. Easy to understand. If you're the slightest bit interested in passing the exam, find a different book.
