Coffee and Capsules Bad
I am fan of Nespresso and "compatible" capsules. There are many really good compatible capsules out there. Some reviewers criticize well established espresso brands and exaggerate how bad they are. I don't do that and I'm not exaggerating here. These are the worst Nespresso compatible capsules I've tried. The company is from New Jersey, the capsules are manufactured in Russia, and according to the boxes the coffee sourced from Africa, Central and South America. There's no specific country of origin information. The main reason I purchased this variety pack is it was on sale at a deep discount. The boxes have unique cover art and I like dark roast coffee. With names like "Eye Popper, "Ressurector", and "Charger" I was excited to try these. The capsules are a hard black plastic and non-descript silver foil. The only way to tell the difference between the capsules is the individually wrapped pouches (2 capsules per pouch). The smell after opening a pouch is not encouraging, it's noxious. Before brewing, I sacrificed a capsule and peeled off the foil. The coffee is stale (no best buy dates either) and has an off aroma. The flavor of the coffee is like bad generic pre-ground coffee. It's a dark roast, but it tastes bland and there are no positive attributes. The capsules themselves are a problem as well. They were causing my machine to struggle too much as evidenced by odd noises, extraordinary delay, and short and uneven shots. Pre-piercing helped, but it's not worth the risk. I started removing the coffee manually from the capsules and using it with my plunger/press coffeemaker, but as of this morning I'm done with them.
