Smiffy's Children's Army Officer Costume, Jacket, Belt, Trousers, Hat, Mock Shirt & Tie, Boys, Size:M, Colour: Green, 27536

First of all I should say I know this is cheap so we were not expecting anything substantial or long-lasting but this is a very flimsy outfit. My three main problems are:1) Although the medal on the front is meant to be a reproduction of the Victoria Cross it looks very much like a German medal. My 11 year old son spent World Book day with a number of (albeit ill educated) kids calling him a Nazi. Not very nice and it was very upsetting for him. Perhaps it would be better with a more generic round medal?2) The collar and tie isn't a full shirt and tie. Its an all-in-one collar and tie combo with small flaps that tuck the "shirt" part under the jacket. These did not work very well and the collar kept popping up and looking very odd. The flaps need to be a lot bigger or have some velcro on them to keep them in place.3) The hat - the hat is awful! It was so badly misshapen that it didn't look like a proper officers hat. In fact the shape and size of it (its massive!) makes it look like one of ridiculous Russian officer peaked caps. It really needed a circle of cardboard in it to stop it going out of shape.If you compare this to the quality of the Fantastic Mr Fox outfit (see below) that Smiffys also sell (for the same price) - the Mr Fox outfit is a far superior outfit. I bought this for my 9 year old for a murder mystery night (he was a general). The costume is actually great overall, once it’s ironed it looks fab! A few things to keep in mind though - the trousers, as mentioned in other reviews, are huge!!! I am 5ft 5 and they fit me as they are so long!!! Not a major problem I guess and I would rather they were too big than too small so they can be altered but be prepared to get your sewing kit out! I had to alter both the neck on false tie/collar and the brown belt that sits on the top - I do have a skinny 9 year old though! Now for the hat...... hmmm I’m not sure how it can actually be used!!?? Once on the peak sits so far down that it covered my sons eyes?! Other reviews say that it’s out of shape but ours looked fine - just not able to wear it.Even after all the altering and not being able to wear the hat I would still recommend this costume as if you prepared to put in a little work it looks fab!

Battle of the Somme and my son looked great. Trousers are quite long but easily taken up. I added some extra medals and a bombardier moustache to complete the look.

I brought this uniform for world book day for my son to dress as Captain Tom Moore, the quality is very good but couldnt wear the tie/shirt insert or hat as too small, the trousers fit well, the jacket just about, there is nothing wrong with this item but just bare in mind of buying a few sizes up, I ordered age 12 my son is 6

I found that the trousers were very long but easily taken up. Jacket fitted ok. Overall it did the job though. Didnt expect the type of material it was made out of as seemed a bit thin but my 11 yr old was quite happy with it.

I ordered this for a school play. I didn't want to pay too much as it would only be worn the once.It looked OK. The fit isn't perfect, but dressing up costumes rarely are. The fabric is quite cheap looking but it looked well made. After being worn once the stitches were starting to fray around the arms and legs.It was OK for what I wanted it for - a cheap costume to wear once.

You need to work on the sizing. I'm 5ft10 and I bought the for my son who is 7 but tall for his age, top if his head is at my chest hight and when he tried on the trousers they came upto his chest, no way is this for a 12 year old.

The outfit looked really good on to be fair, apart from the over the shoulder strap which was too long and baggy. The downside was the poor quality stitching. The outfit lasted only a few hours when the arm came away at the top. Had to bin it after only one use.
